Travelling to morocco by car (leased/mobility)
 

Hello.

I'm going on holiday with my family to Morocco and we'd like to drive there, but the only problem is, is that my car is a leased mobility car. I know I can drive it in the EU but I don't know how to go about driving outside of the EU, and of course Morocco is outside the EU.

I have a VE103 certificate from RAC. Will that be fine? If not then what do I need? Please could you give me all the information you're aware of about this, and if possible also some sort of step by step?

Good question. All I know is I have travelled with vehicles that were not in my name (as your VE103 - below - will be) but had letters of permission from the owners (or former keepers). In fact on one bike, I think I may not have even had the original V5. I had no problems at the border, either time.

A convincing looking letter of permission from the leasing agency whose name and address appears on the VE103 will do the trick.

I don't know if they issue such letters as a matter of course, but it needs to link the vehicle listed on the VE103 with your name and address. And if it can be stamped in some way and have a version in French as well as show dates of arrival and departure from Morocco, then so much the better.

Also good will be to do your D16-TER temporary import permit in advance online (as explained here).
That streamlines your passage through immigration; less chance of getting tripped up.

If your name is not the name on the vehicle documents, or a lien-holder is shown, you should carry documentation to cover the discrepancy. We were held up getting into Morocco and Turkey because to get around EU regulations, our german motorhome is registered and insured in the selling company's name. In both cases I was able to talk my way through using the original receipt written in German but even that nearly failed because the receipt didn't list our passport details. Had the same problem getting into Mexico with a different vehicle because we own the vehicle via a Limited Liability Company.
As Chris suggests, you don't need much documentation to satisfy customs that you have a legitimate right to be driving the vehicle and I have used a DIY version a couple of times, but given the cost and time getting all the way down to Morocco and the chance of striking an official with good eyesight having a bad day, it might be worth trying to get an official letter from the lease holder.
An alternative precaution is when you book the ferry ticket, the agent usually fills out the import documentation for you and if they add your name as an owner as well, the customs officer will likely accept it without question (as that is how I got in. He pushed the paper back to me and said I should add my name in the owners box and then he was happy)

We've devised a standard letter of permission in French which is accepted by Moroccan customs. PM me for a copy if you like.
