Spanish Sahara..
Stumbled across my old stamp collection (1960/70's), and on the back a world map showing, "South Morocco" as Spanish Sahara.

The stamp above is from the teleferique / teleferico / cableway the Spaniards constructed in Sidi Ifni in the 60's. Lacking a natural port they used this to load/unload the ships. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7y8kEV5aRU
The stamp that stayed vividly in my memory since boyhood was however of a lonely fortress, in the solitude between desert and ocean. It looked romantic, like a hidden faraway treasure. |
I think these floating concrete caissons(floating boxes) were first used by the Allied Forces during the Normandy landings to liberate Europe from the Nazis.
Since then they are extensively used in marine civil engineering for foundations to bridges and oil platforms et al. Nice to see an early,peaceful use....even if it was for 'colonials'bier |
I love looking through old stamp albums and seeing how the names of places has changed over the years, nearly half of the countries in Africa must of changed theirs since colonial times.
I partly blame stamp collecting for my interest in travel. |
There is a direct connection I think from the child going over the stamp collection and dreaming of exotic places, to the overlander in a 4x4. I know it was in my case.
