reliable fuel south of Merzouga

I'm going to give the Merzouga to Tagounite piste a try (MS6) cutting a bit of the end off to head NW to Zagora. The distance means that I will problably have to carry fuel unless there are reliable fuel outlets along the way. Is there anything at Taouz, Hassi Remilia or and especially at Tafraoute?

Also I was going to have a pop on the Mhamid to Tata piste (MS8). The map is showing fuel at Mhamid and I would imagine Lake Iriqi will be dry of fuel (and hopefully water). Is there a fuel station near Mrimina or maybe Tissint? If this is so then again I won't need to take extra fuel apart from my emergeny reserve.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,
There's a new Afriquia station just north of Merzouga.
The only fuel in Taouz, Remlia and Tafaroute will be from barrels. And at Mhamid. There's a Ziz fuel statin in Tagounite and an Afriquia in Foum Zguid. Cant't remember one in Mrmina.

Happy trails

Peter

That is really helpful thanks! I'll be building in a lot of lee way so a few water bottles with fuel in might be carried if it is looking close, but better the less if I can!

There's an embarrassing surfeit of fuel depots along the Merzouga to Tagounite route. Typically you will pay 15 dh/litre instead of 9.3 but I'm happy to do that. Good quality fuel, often transferred using a fuel filter inline.

Jadid: N30 50.891 W4 09.766
Ramlia: N30 41.189 W4 24.936
Tafraoute Sidi Ali: N30 41.332 W4 40.991
Oumjrane: N30 38.474 W5 06.304
Tissamoumine: N30 36.202 W5 09.655

There's a Ziz north of Mhamid at N29 59.352 W5 35.054, then several fuel depots in Mhamid to top off if you want. No fuel stations between Mhamid and Tata (via piste) though there's a line of five auberges around N29 56.145 W6 24.390 that you could ask.

Also no fuel stations at Mrimina or Tissint though again if you ask around you will probably find some for sale—clearly the guys on their small capacity bikes won't be riding all the way to either Tata or FZ in order to stick a couple of litres in their tank.

Another alternative would be to fill a couple of 1.5-litre water bottles with fuel then dump the contents into the tank after 50 and 100 km (and then chuck the bottles but put the tops on before you do, someone will reuse them). After you get to the divergence of the FZ and Tata pistes at N29 43.546 W6 51.073 there is a chance you might get turned back by the military in which case head for FZ via N29 48.632 W6 56.223

Invaluble Tim, thanks, those waypoints will really come in!

I've updated my fuel waypoint database, see Maps, guidebooks, and GPS (installing maps, waypoints/POI, and creating routes)

This provides an easy way (on Garmin Zumo devices at least) to store 320+ fuel waypoints as points of interest rather than ordinary waypoints.

As stated on the website, these are not to be incorporated in other collections, thank you.

When did you update them Tim?

I did download them about six months ago and thing they are somewhere on one of my cards, but perhaps I should be making better use of it!

cheers again

Dave

Also you'll be surprised at how far your fuel goes in Morocco if you are just bumbling along. When not doing motorway liaisons I have no difficulty getting 25 km per litre which, with a 12-litre tank, gives me 300 km absolute range.
