R307 Demnate

Can anyone tell me if the above route, heading south to North is doable in a large camper van...... Like within the next couple of days.

Tim Cullis 13 Mar 2018 00:23

Writing as a camper van owner and aware of limitations, I would guess it will probably be OK. Yes there's been snow damage but locals need to get their stuff to market and I would think it's doable.

The challenge is the area near Tizi n’Fedhrat which is about 80-85km into the journey. About 60km into the journey there's the Hotel Cafe Atlas which is close enough to the Tizi to be able to advise you.

Many thanks Tim, have passed that on.

R307

Travelled R307 south to north this time last year in a converted Citroen Relay (18ft.)... Took most of the day from Quaz' to Denmate. Road was washed out in some places. Weather was warm at time ...no snow. Very little traffic, although did meet two Motorhomes (medium coachbuilt) heading south earlier on.
Probably the worst road we used last year.
Alec.

May 15 2019, all paved (various widths, some potholes). Some issues in the tight hairpins where water erosion has broken the pavement or scattered rocks and debris.

Starting in Demnat , large construction to widen and pave the route, about 10km dusty...

Don't expect to go fast : when it starts climbing from the south, after the long straight stretch the road conditions degrade really badly. But I think it is doable.
I did it feb. 2019 on a bike and it was a really beautiful. I went from Ouarzazate to Ouzoud in one day but honestly it was too much. It took 10hrs for me and my husqy 701 I think. So don't expect to do that in a day : but it's a camper van, so you can stop and chill wherever you feel like it :innocent:

a few pictures for reference :mchappy: (Yes, I am a terrible photographer)

R307 Skoura - Demnate

We just done the R307 from south to north (11.September 2019) stopping in Demnate for 2 nights.
Weather was good and as previously mentioned(Numer0_6) the road deteriates as climb higher.
We were on Suzuki's 1993 DR650 and 1994 DR800S fully loaded.
After the heavy rain days before some road sections were rough and wet/muddy. One section after Tikhfist was cleared by a digger after a landslide.
Coming down towards Demnate the road got better and the last stretch was in the process of being fully tarmaced. Lot's of loose gravel around bends so had to go really slow.
It took us 4.5 hours in total from Skoura to Demnate. It can be done with a Camper van, but it will take you much longer.

Haven't done it myself, but I see they've cut a new road to the west on the northern section of the 307.
Routes diverge at 2100-m Col d’Azwin 31.5672, -7.0046 for 17km and meet at 31.66966, -6.9338.

Image below shows the span of the new road highlit on the left, old 'R307' on the right. Maybe easier to make a new one than disrupt all the villages for months.

Google calls both ‘Rue 307’ (I saw ‘RN23’ for the new road on an OSM) and routes you the old way to the east, though just following your nose you'd probably drive the new way which ought to be smoother going.

As mentioned recently (Dec 23), coming from the south, the 307 gets as frost-damaged as ever until you reach the provincial boundary at a col at which point a new wide road runs northwards - on and off.

One of my fave roads in morocco , i always go north off the n10 , It really is the real morocco !

Tim Cullis 6 Jan 2024 17:18

Six years ago, the regional designations of the roads R305, R205 and R307 were replaced with a national road designation of N23 which covers the stretch from Bouznika to Ouarzazate. I see this as a good thing as a 'national' status road implies a higher degree of maintenance and I guess this is what has led to a new stretch being blasted.

The change of road numbering was quickly adopted by Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap. I have the 2020 version of OpenStreetMap as one of my Basecamp maps and it shows the previous R307 as the N23.

It seems the old section of road has now been given back to the regional authorities to maintain as the R307.

As usual, Google is way out of date with the Moroccan road numbering. The only bit of the major 2018 overhaul of road grades and numbers that Google seems to have implemented is to rename the R703 heading north from Tinerhir to become the new N12.

However in an attempt to thoroughly confuse map users, the old N12 which was renamed six years ago to become the N17 is still shown on Google Maps as the N12, despite all the roadsigns being updated to the new N17 number. So now Google is showing two completely different N12 routes!

Amezri to Aitain to ?

Has anyone done this route ?
looking on Google earth it show a "piste "
Keith

Chris Scott 18 Jan 2024 20:06

Can't find 'Aitain' but if you mean Demnate road to Amezri, I see it's a lot more road now than when I did it in 2019 on a Him, but there is still a bit of piste which was riverbed westbound to Ait Hamza. I think I recognised it in one of Itchy's 'OMG!' vids earlier in the year.

Thanks

Did it late November, theres now a tarmac route on the north side of the valley but the old piste is still there.

When you get to the RP1502 junction there are signs heading north to Kelaat Mgouna which I followed for about an hour on a new road, eventually looping back west, with nothing on the maps or sat photos and daylight running out I turned around.

I've had look on more sat images for this new road and its either not shown or the sign post is incorrect
