Piste M'Hamid to Form Ziguid

Did it in October, not much to report really. West to East we headed from Tafroute Sidi Ali upto the lost city POI in Olafs maps and then across to Taouz. Bit of Feche Feche crossing Oued Rhreris

Warden: I think you are confused about the route being questioned.

Overland Tonka: there's a very stony piste skirting the edge of the Lak/hills which is shown on Olaf maps and also in Chris Scott's book but the best route is across Lak Iriki for which you need extensive waypoints—the problem is knowing how to exit M'hamid over the low dunes and how to get to the hard lake bed.

You're quite right Tim, ill in bed atm so not thinking clearly.

Still, we did Mhamid to Foum Zguid a day earlier running east to west. Lac Iriki was fine in October, Erg Cheggaga was great but a lot of tourist 4x4s on the piste to the main camps

Do you have the above mentioned waypoints in gpx format by any chance :)? I think I have some waypoints going through lak Irici but don't have access to my PC right now so cannot confirm

Pleased to say all went well...we crossed the lake as suggested.
The first 60klm from M'Hamid was a case of picking the best route through as you went along. As said, no real piste, just a lot of sand.
The first day was cut short by high winds bringing visibility down, so we headed for the rock hills and called it a day after 2.5 hours of driving.

Last time we crossed from Foum Z we arrived at those little dunes rather late in the day, when first the entire exhaust fell off, then the upper back door (yeah I know, ratty vehicle :) )
Strapped everything together, had to take it a little easy, got stuck a couple times. Arrived M'Hamid right after dark. A couple hours later, everything welded and in good shape for the lendemain. bier

this is my first post on HU even if I found some useful informations about some other trips some years ago. We are a couple from Italy, travelling Morocco with a 4x4 VW Campervan.

I found this post about Foum Zguid - M'hamid piste (Chris Scott's MS7) and as we are in FZ at the moment and planning the route.

We thought about doing it alone in our VW T3 syncro but now some thoughts are coming to mind and we are trying to find a carovane or a group to share a 4x4 guide to help us to find the way. Or at least some up to date informations. Actually I found a track on Wikiloc that is dated 31 march 2015 so it has been done after the big rains of late 2014... I tryed to overlayer this route to MS7 waypoints and they are really close one to each other. What I mean is that I start to feel comfortable with the route itself and I am now thinking about doing it alone.
We have water, petrol, GPS, Chris Scott Mor. Over. and sand mats.

Any further advice would be really appreciated.

Even if you know of someone who is heading to Chegaga today or tomorrow and want to share the adventure. Would be really helpful.

The route from Chris' book is very straight forward and keeps north of the areas where things may possibly be more difficult (Lac Iriki and the dunes)

This area is popular with tourist tours so there can be quite a lot of traffic (we passed 40+ landcruiser's carrying tourists in October!). Handy if you need help.

Use some common sense, if the Lac is wet and muddy stay out of it likewise with the dunes. Approaching Mhamid it's a little more sandy but your not too far from help if its needed

I had just lost a long text that I wrote for this thread because of a phone failure.

In short words then sorry: I have some sand dunes driving experience with this van so feel comfortable about the erg.

We hired a driver with a second car and we leave Foum Zguid tomorrow 25 December 2015 from main roundabout in town at 9.30.
Anyone want tho share the assistance car or even overnight with us is really welcome. 4wheels drivers or bikers.

We did the piste from Foum Zguid to Mhamid, passing through the north side of the lake Iriki. It was really good fun.
The guide's Land Rover had an engine failure 10 km away from the camp and we left them waiting for a mechanic from FZ. Overnight between dunes and some few other tourists. Happy days!

The piste is really sandy in the first part between lake Iriki and the erg. It get back rocky next to the dunes and close to the Holy Oasis, it becomes sandy again on the last part of the piste next to Mhamid.

I used 1 bar pressure for front wheels and 1.3 at the rear. Our 2.2L VW did it well and safe. Sand mats never used but sometimes it was tricky.

I don't know if it's right to post a picture in this thread and a GPS track for who is interested in. Anyway I will update my blog once we are back home in January and if someone is interested we are uploading some pictures at the link that follow.
