Moroccon moped question....hunt for a honda ss50
 

Morning all,

This is a bit of a random question but about three years ago i was in morocco surfing in the Tagazout region and on a couple of quiet periods, went out for an explore around. Obviously there were loads of people on mopeds but i also saw quite a few people on what looked to be old Honda ss50's?

So my question is this...does anyone have any info on if these are in abundance over there as i was thinking of going out, buying one and then riding it back to uk and restoring it? Are they genuine ones or cheap chinese copies? Are there any laws about getting them out of morroco?

Any help would be massively appreciated.

I recall similarly odd 70s moped encounters when I've passed through Iknioun below Jebel Sarhro. Place was full of FSIEs. Very odd. Everywhere else clapped out Mobies and that, but no 70s Jap sports mopeds.

I suspect exporting from Morocco into Europe may be tricky. For a start you can't buy a local moto if not a resident (I was told last night) though an unregistered / unplated moped doesn't count. I will ask as I wouldn't mind buying a Tornado. May help to buy as parts. Buying a 40 year old moped that's been retired to Morocco will be mostly a loose assembly of parts anyway ;-)

Yes Chris you are right you have to be a Moroccan to buy a road registered bike and therefore have the title. If you know and trust a resident / Moroccan national they can buy it for you (and probably get a better deal). You can then have a contract written and notarized to state you have paid for the bike. Still, be careful because the title holder will be responsible for any traffic violations or misdemeanours.
