Morocco insurance - any driver?
 

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if the standard insurance that you can buy at Tanger is for the car (and anyone can drive it)?

I don't suppose you can buy it at Ceuta, can you?

i bought insurance for my bike from Compagnie D'Assurance Transport through a RMA Watanya branch that covered me for 3rd party only and valid for 6 months. was expensive though but probably worth it if spending the entire 6 months in morocco, about 3800dh. mine was shipped in to casa so not sure about ceuta or tanger.

Take your Green Card Insurance as its valid for Morocco. Its free.

Not for us Brits, unfortunately. Only a few insurance companies will issue a Green Card for Morocco for free. NFU and CIS are good but it's a hit and miss affair. Some insurers charge for Green Cards and some won't issue them at all.

It may be a bargaining tool when you comev to renew your insurance.

Thanks for the replies. The problem seems to have been solved by the cancellation of the ferry to Spain (twice - 2nd time whilst we were on the road to Plymouth). So now we're flying to Marrakech on Easyjet and hiring a 2010 Pajero from Morrocar. I'll let you know how we got on.

Won't be as much fun, but it works out about £500 cheaper than driving down from Calais (overnight stops, fuel, tolls).

I ride a bike of US registry and get EU insurance in Luxembourg, which does not include Morocco. Was told I could buy it at the border.
Showed up at the Melilla/Beni Ansar border on a Sunday. Found all insurance agencies closed and was told to come back Monday. Returned to Melilla for the night.
On Monday the insurance offices were still closed tight. After inquiring around got in touch with a "helper" who offered to solve the problem for 20€. I watched him as he went back and forth talking to several uniformed officials, and after much haggling he got my entry permit stamped, with the instruction to go to the nearest insurance agency and buy insurance.
Found no other insurance agencies open anywhere, but I was already in the country. With anxious thoughts of "Midnight Express" in the back of my mind I proceeded Southwest deep into Morocco. Ended up staying for 10 days in the country. Insurance was not an issue, although had I been involved in an accident, I would have probably found myself in deep trouble.

My question is:

How can one purchase insurance for Morocco BEFORE entering the country, if it is not included in your Green Card? :(

Very good question. Last time I brought it at Tangier Med it had the vehicle and my details on it. You could ask to put all the drivers on the insurance.

You couldn't a couple of years ago.

When we entered through Tanger Med last year and needed to buy insurance there (since our UK insurance doesn't cover it) the booth was also shut. We could have left and carried on uninsured but stayed put till it opened.

One port official said we could just carry on and find another insurance shop which we did see some of later.

Everyone we asked said the booth should be open but didn't know where they'd gone. We actually stayed in the Gare Maritime car park for two nights in our camper waiting for it to open up, which was a bit weird but fun and we met some characters :)

The man who eventually appeared, and had in fact been dragged by one of our friends from an office in the building where he'd been sleeping all morning, also said if we drove slowly we could have just waited until we found another shop. Well we could have just driven slowly the whole trip surely!?

We knew there was a shop at Tanger Med and not at Ceuta at the time and is why we sailed there.

I can't yet find the certificate to see if its just my name on it, or indeed any name, but I'm still looking.

My car insurance is with Saga (main driver needs to be over 50) it includes free green card insurance for Morocco. I just let them know about six weeks before I go. Well when I say it's free.... I could have got cheaper insurance by about £80. I went for saga as there is no faffing around looking for insurance which I can't read. It covers myself and named drivers.

Insurance - Tangier City
 

I got the ferry over from Tarifa to Tangier in April 2012. Nobody was interested in seeing my insurance papers. I got a morning ferry over and planned to buy insurance at the port. There was an insurance hut on the right just as you leave customs but it was shut (it was mid-week and I got there about 11:00). As it was pouring down with rain I headed off hoping to pick up some insurance later on. Never did stumble across an insurance office so just took my chances.....

Whilst it was OK for me, I wouldn't suggest anyone does the same. The chances of having a (small) accident in Morocco are quite high - especially of you're not used to busy traffic in the bigger cities. Could get messy explaining yourself to the police should you have a crash and cause some (or someone) damage. There are also police checkpoints everywhere, particularly as you enter towns / cities. I was only once asked for my registration details and passport but nothing else.
