Morocco Atlas conditions January

Is there any point trying to navigate 2000M high roads in Morocco in January?

I'm specifically thinking of the R507 / R502 between Taza and Boulemane. Anyone know if this area receives much snow this time of year? Is the area nice? I'd rather not stick to the N6 and N8 roads that go via Fes.

The Cirque de Jaffar / Midelt / Imilchil area is probably even worse this time of year?

Thanks!

It all depends whether there's been snow recently. My experience is that the Middle Atlas region around Ifrane and Azrou (and presumably east to Taza) seems to get more snow than the High Atlas.

The R507/502 is a lovely road and it does get cleared (eventually) when there has been snow. Grand taxi drivers and cafe waiters are a good information resource.

Given my experience I'd suggest steering clear of the Cirque de Jaffar if travelling alone, and of course if it snows on a piste you are well and truly 'up the Suwannee'. Steve Attwood got caught in a snowstorm in Imilchil and was marooned for three days before a truck with plough attachment came through and cleared the tarmac road.

Thanks Tim! Good info as usual :)

I crossed through Sefrou-Midelt-Er Rachidia about two weeks ago. Very cold, frost on the road in the morning and black ice, but no snow. I crossed again a week ago through the Tizi-n-Tichka back to Marrakech, no snow, no ice. I don't know if this info helps, it could have snowed since.
