Garmin Topo map of Morocco

Hi Hubb
Do any of you have experience with the Garmin Topo map of Morocco? Positive, negative?

Tim Cullis 13 Jul 2016 19:19

Highly negative. Garmin didn't want to refund the purchase as I had installed it, but I was able to document so many problems they had no choice.

Use Olaf's topo map instead

Tim Cullis 13 Jul 2016 19:37

Yes, I continue to use Olaf's map by choice as it was built by 4x4 and adventure moto enthusiasts, so the tracks are accurate even though it's not been updated in a while.

See my maps and gps page for more information.

Garmin are possibly the most user unfriendly company I have ever come accross:(

Of course you can also use an OSM garmin map for Morocco (free). It does autoroute and has at least some tracks on it.
Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap

You may even be able to have both the OSM map and Olaf's map on your GPS at the same time ... just be certain that you learn how to turn each off while the other remains on .... so you can sort out what is what on the GPS.

They also have the best hardware and software, allowing users to use many different types of maps from different sources on dedicated navigation devices.

Of course, if you know a better solution, please share. I'd love to hear what device gives you the freedom and customizing options that Garmin does. Just don't mention smartphone apps because that's an entire different category (using tiny gps antenna's).

Can confirm that OpenStreetMaps are pretty good. Fairly easy to install on Garmin devices. I used this formula in Vietnam and was amazed at the detail available.

Another solution could be using maps.me on a smartphone. It's a free Android / iOs app that lets you download OpenStreetMap data for offline use.

So you download the Morocco maps at home or anywhere with wifi and from then on you use it pretty much like google maps. It's also routable, you can enter a starting point and destination and searching for those locations also works offline.

I haven't tested the detail available for Morocco but I guess you can check for yourself on the web version of OSM and it's pretty good, especially in the cities.

I've been using OSM and Olaf on my Garmin set up under two profiles to allow quick changes between the 2 on the move.

But know have a new better solution after combining Olaf with the latest OSM maps into one map set. Gives the improved accuracy of OSM with the Topo information from Olaf.

Olafs Maps

Hi,
I use Olaf Maps 5 years ago ...

The gas station list wasn't up to date but the map works fine.
