Oman - general Infos

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Oman and have some general questions to this:

- I plan for April. Is there the weather still comfortable or its getting too hot already? I will be in the area Muscat (greater Muscat) - Nizwa - Sur (Sur only if have time).

- Can you recommend a nice affordable hotel in Muscat area? Or some I should avoid?

- I want rent a Landcruiser there for roaming around. Do someone know a good location where to rent?

Thanks a lot for infos. I know that these are general questions but in the internet you only get "too general" answers.

Kind regards,

Paul

$x4 Hire Oman

This is a copy of similar request that Pete_52 answered for me last year(Tread on pp2 of Middle East Pages).

Tony,

Probably around R.O 25-30 per day (40 to 45 GBP) but you would need to check. Possibly cheaper for a block month period.

I suggest that you e-mail Mark Car Hire ask them your questions. They seem to have decent cars and would probably be able to advise you generally. Others are the usual Hertz, Budget etc. They all hire out Land Cruisers to the tourist and business market here.

A negotiable alternative is ABC rent a car, Mr Joy (abcrent@omantel.net.om), but do check the insurance situation as I have heard bad reports. This is who I hire from if necessary but only saloons to replace cars in for repair or service.

If you ask for PDO spec, it will come with additional spare tyre, roll cage etc but might be diesel.

I don't know about insurance you should check that with the hire companies

If you get no luck let me know and I will ask the next time that I am at the Airport as all the hire desks are there.

April won't be uncomfortably hot, if you can try and visit Salalah.

Temperatures are as following: (Googe is your friend, noone can be less general about temperatures except for maybe Davied Copperfield)

Climate of Muscat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I just asked my Office for rates for a Landcruiser for a german Friend. (Problem with Hertz and those is that you book a car class, but what you get in the end is never shure, it may turn out to be a Lexus or whatever) We do tours in the Rub al Khali and rent Landcruiser 200's with V6 petrol engines for that. Our accountant said 290OMR per week for one of those. What are you intnding to do and how long for? There is a company called Nomad Reisen and they rent completely equipped Landcruisers with rooftents, sand ladders, recovery straps, shovel, fridge, stove, Fuel and water canisters, chairs and table. Maybe that's an Option for you if you want to invest the Hotel money into a completely liveable car setup. The chances of rain are pretty low in April, so you can even sleep outdoors, no probem. (I haven't yet set up a tent to sleep here once)

If you have more specific questions I can google them for you, no problem ;-)

December 2014, I lodged at Naseem Hotel, just in front of the "corniche" of Muscat, 3 minutes walk from the suq.

I don't remember the price, but it was much lower than the average price of similar accomodations at Muscat.
My motorcycle was parked two nights in front of the hotel's entrance, very safe, and for 4-wheel vehicles there's a large parking lot (not theirs, anyway, it's public) just behind them.
Staff was very friendly and room was quite clean.
I e-mailed them for a price enquiry and they replied in a few hours.

Just one tip: if you will visit the Wadi Tiwi, pay attention to the water crossing the road at the beginning.
I fell at only 20-30 km/h remaining underneath the GS, the tarmac is as slippery as ice in that point.
I saw a large SUV proceeding with blocked wheels as if the driver was driving on snow, so pay attention even if you will be on 4 wheels.

Thanks all for the tips and information.

My tour planning is finished, so I am eager to do my first trip in Middle East area.

Cheers,
Paul
