Kuwait to Iran via Iraq? Or is there a ferry?

Would it be possible to receive an Iraq transit or tourist visa in Kuwait, then travel by car to Iran? Is the Iraq-Iran border open to foreigners? What's the security situation in southern Iraq currently? Looking at the map it seems it's less than 100kms from the Kuwait/Iraq border to the Iraq/Iran border east of Basra.

Does anyone know if there's still a car ferry from Kuwait to Iran?

The ferry mentioned by Fysl is open to foreigners.

The landroute through Iraq is not! Even if the distance is a mere 100 kilometres or so, it is still an extremely dangerous area (even though the South of Iraq is nowadays much calmer than Baghdad!). As much as I have heard in Baghdad, the Iranian-Iraqi border is not open to foreigners in the South but only to the Kurdish North of Iraq (see other threads here). The Saudi - Iraqi border is de facto closed completely. Saudi and Emirati trucks and taxis make the long detour through Jordan ...
