Well - full marks to the pair of you, Achim and Flotter for resurrecting this thread, and for your bravery in entering Egypt with the political situation as it is. Not as bad as Syria, I suppose.

Anyway - when we left Egypt via Nuweiba in 2007 it took LONGER than getting in at Umm Saad (the Libya border). I'd allow a good 5 hours to get out, and don't make the mistake of getting to the ferry port too late.

As per my post on your other thread unfortunately you'll have to reimport into Egypt as if for the first time. New plates, new insurance, new customs charges, new baksheesh and so on. A fixer will be cheaper than in Port Said but otherwise you'll pay all over again.

You're also talking a lot of dosh for the ferry if you're taking a car both ways ($815 by my calculations for two people and a 4x4).

Thank you very much for the information.

I am keeping options open given the already difficult situation in Egypt.

The only problem with the Jordan-Egypt entry is the fact that I will have to go through Israel to get to Jordan (from Turkey where I am now), which will complicate or prevent entry later into Sudan.

However, I am still keeping this option open.

even you didn't visit israel, they can turn you back at the border. that is what happened with me in Syria. it depend on how stupid that guy who stamp your passport. even they don't allow you to one gate, try another one which is closest to you at the moment or just wait when another officials come. The absence of the israeli stamp in passport doesn't mean anything.

Hi Alex,

It does not really make sense do discuss this at this point because nobody ventures to cross Syria right now.

Nevertheless, if you had such an experience it would be useful to describe it precisely: In which year and at which border did it happen? Did you have a visa for Syria or did you try to get a transit visa at the border (this it where sometimes travelers were refused to enter Syria).

It is true that Syria was not the easiest of borders. But under normal circumstances it was fairly straightforward if your papers were OK. It usually became tricky when you had visited Israel before and the officer recognized the remains (mainly the glue) of the little white sticker the Israelis use to put on your passport or if you wanted to buy a transit visa at the border which was not the regular way of doing things.

I have crossed the border so many times between 2008 and 2011 that I would seriously doubt that your experience was the rule of the game.

In any case: Since the thread is on a different topic, this was just a quick insert.

Greetings,
Achim

This topic was started in 2008 when I came back from Africa to Europe. It doesn't matter which gate I went through to Syria. There is a war now. Israel keeps your passport clean if you want. But in Sudan they can see departure stamp from Turkey and arrival stamp in Egypt. If there are some days between the dates you may spend that time in Israel. In my case I was stamped out from Egypt and spent 2 days waiting a ferry in Nuweiba because of sea storm. So I got an arrival stamp in Jordan a couple of days later than it usually happens. What's a problem? Yes there was a problem in Syria. Nobody wants to know about sea storm or whatever I tried to tell them. The false conclusion was I had been in Israel. And I have a russian passport, I don't need the visa, we are but a friends...isn't?! I was not allowed in Syria there. Nobody could tell me what I should to do. I came back to Jordan next morning and occupied the shipping company in Amman. The same afternoon I had got an official letter with a ferry schedule changing because of the sea storm. For more assurance of success I'd chosen another gate to get in Syria. Nobody asked me about Israel or Egypt or sea storm there. I was stamped in Syria right away. Good luck)

Alex
