I do not wish to offend anyone.. also can I purchase vehicule insurance @ the border or do I go it alone. crossing in the morning makes sense any hints tips for first night accomodation heading towards Esphahan.. any help would be welcome, if none available...

Hi,

The name of the border is "Gurbulak". You can obtain insurance at the Iranian side of the border and the price is £27 for a month. It is all I can say.

good luck:)

Never bothered with insurance in Iran. Border crossing no hassles - just the opposite, they made us very welcome. A number of different options for your first night - Hamadan was an interesting city. Don't rush through the country if you don't have to - lots to see and very friendly people. Check out our blog for more info.

If you have Carnet and VISA, then no problem! If there's rush hour on the border exped few hours, otherwise it can be quicker.

There is also accomodation just over the border.

There are some fabulous underground caves near Hamadan that I were one of the highlights of the tour for me - the best stalagtites and mites I have ever seen.

Simon, where is the accomodation? At the Turkish side or Iranian side?

Thanks.

Accomodtion available on the Iranian side, also down the road in Maku and just up the road from the border in Doyabeyazit (or however it is spelt) in Turkey.

I don't remember the name of the hotel on the Turkish side, but the Lonley Planet guidebook lists two very cheap ones. One is upstairs, but the other will let you bring your bike into the downstairs cafe where it will be locked up at night. The guy who runs the place claims to know a very good mechanic should you need one at that time.
