SA : Teaching English(or French) while learning Spanish
 

I am planning a multi-month trip thru South America for next year and I would be interested in opportunities where I could teach English or French as a second language while learning Spanish.

I would be intereted in a project where I could teach for two to five weeks in exchange for a free room and some Spanish Lessons or the opportunity to converse a lot in Spanish.

I do not hold a teaching degree but I have a BBA from a reputable American University. I am also certified to Teach French as a Second Language in the State Of Georgia.

I am bilangual in both French and English. My Spanish is basic but I manage.

I would prefer to help out in a remote area where people have little means and scarce opportunities to get acces to an English speaker.

If anyone has an experience or contact info to share, it would be most apreciated.

I guess the best way would be google all the language schools in a place you'd like to stay.

If you offer to work voluntarily especially.

Many people do TEFL qualifications to show at least a basic level of teaching ability.

The courses aren't so cheap though. Around £1000 minimum.

Only a few month until arrival in SA.

Taking suggestions in and will let you know what happens.

I started with exactly the same plan (in Africa) a few years ago, now I'm a professional English teacher. I started with those two websites above. They are work-for-lodging websites, and English teacher/tutor is probably the most common position available. Generally they are looking for longer term volunteers but my first time was only 3 weeks so it's possible. You have to pay for full registration on both of those websites ($20?). In some cases you can find the program names through those websites, then google them and contact them directly, thus avoiding the need to register.

Be wary of for-profit volunteer scams ("come teach our poor children! $500 per week"), but other than that don't be too picky. Once you have 'experience' on your resume then you will make contacts and find better jobs.

If you can't find anything through those websites, just start contacting any and all private English language schools wherever you travel. Eventually somebody will offer you something. I've done this too. The trouble is generally you'll end up in larger towns or cities.

EDIT: I have no certifications. That's only important if you want longer term, more lucrative contracts.
