LC 80 diesel engine for RTW
 
Hello,

I am planning a RTW trip and am currently in the early stages of searching for the right car. I have decided myself on the Land Cruiser 80. As far as i noticed, people tend to prefer the simple diesel engine rather than the turbo one for overlanding. What are your opinions on this? What are the advantages and the disadvantages for the turbo vs normal diesel engine?

The turbos do add an extra layer of complexity, however they aren't noted as being a weakness on the 80 series.

With 99% of the overlanding 80 series being turbo charged I really wouldn't worry too much about it.

As long as the vehicle is properly baselined in the first place you should be fine.

Get a turbo.. Power will save you more times for getting stuck - than decent tyres - specially on sand. Also when you cross the alps - you are happy about your horses.

And a well maintained Land Cruiser will do it..

I have crossed africa in a brand new Land Cruiser 200 V8 (Diesel Biturbo)...

everything is relative.

It's like saying having your eye removed with a cocktail stick is less painfull than removing your plums with a rusty spoon, it still bloody hurts!!

The old 4 litre NA engine was insanely reliable. The turbo may be slightly less so, but it's still one of the most reliable motors out there.

It is relitive....
 
I'm knocking on 300,000km on a 4.2 straight 6 no turbo. Most of these km's are hard overlanding (Africa, Russia, Mongolia, Outback Australia).


I swear by the 'No Turbo, No Power, No Problems' saying, but I have to admit, sometimes it'd be great to have that extra bit of grunt.

So even though I don't have a turbo, I'd say if the vehicle is in good check before you set out, you should be ok. Also depends on the year of the car and how it was treated.

Hi,
I've just got back from a 65000km trip in Africa with a non-turbo'd HJ60. It's simple, reliable and tough as old boots. I found it basically perfect for my needs.
Were there times where i wished i had a turbo?......for sure there were!

Either way, make sure it's properly sorted before you go and you'll be fine.
