If your Hj only has two wheels then, that's probably your biggest concern

Check out Chris Scotts website. his book on Sahara Overland has a 4wheel
section and covers the Landcruisers. He covers vehicle preparation too!

Enjoy

Hi Traveller,
The biggest unforeseen expense on mine was when i realised the splines on the output shaft of the gearbox were badly worn :eek3::eek3:
It meant a total gearbox and transfer box tear down, but would have been a complete show stopper when the eventually sheared (whether it would have been in 200 or 200000 miles time i'm not sure but probably nearer the latter!!)
I'd make sure you've dropped the rear prop and with it in gear rotate the output flange where the prop attached on the transfer box. There will be some play, but if there's too much i'd def get a second opinion on it.

Happy travels
Sam

Howdy Dan,
It's a bit of a lump to say the least!! I particularly like the cast iron casing:eek3:
I haven't had any joy with second hand places really, the odd guy here and there with some bits, but nothing for the bodywork.
As far as i can tell, they are all either exported or rust away and the engine/trans put in something else.
Again, i'll let you know if i come across anything for sure

Dont forget the UK suppliers, Have you made contact with Julian V from the HUBB ?
I'm just back from a week in Egypt running around in a 500.000 km HJ60, originally sold in Germany looking at the stickers, great car kept going.... even after the battery fused on the bonnet, bloody sparks and smoke everywhere....
Enjoy your travels ...

gearboxes seem to be a weakspot, especially after prolonged high speed (relatively!) driving or towing. mine started to pack up on the way back from Africa on the run through france. It finally failed a few thousand miles later, although I cxould still drive using 4th only, setting off in low box then double declutching into high.:smartass:
there used to be a guy called Grosvenor garage near reading that dismantled these but I don't have his number anymore. you may be able to locate him by other means (yellow pages or yell.com)
The other thing to look out for is the swivels. Unlike a landie the chrome balls aren't removable so if they are pitted (like mine) the oil pours out and there's not much you can do about it, except replace the whole axle, or change the bearings on a regular basis!

rclafton 9 Mar 2010 20:42

The landrover 101 has the same problem - welded balls !

Some owners with pitted swivels had alot of success with liquid metal, wet & dry and alot of patience to produce a flat surface

hj60 h55f gearbox / input and main shaft needed / and info

Recently removed gearbox from a hj60 GX 1989 / 5 speed h55f. it's been opened, and looks like all bearings from gearbox and transfer need replacing. Also input and main shaft worn. Not seen how badly from photos yet

Keen on getting this back up to speed. Rest of truck is in great condition so worth doing the box

Any ideas of how to source these parts in the UK or in Europe.

Or anyone with a rebuilt gearbox or parts for sale

tacr2man 28 Nov 2011 10:46

fifth gear in cruisers upto about 2002 IIRC was a weak point esp if towing , it actually tells you in handbook not to tow in fifth but says "to keep better control of load " instead of saying its bearing is highly loaded . A good move is to use a full synthetic gear oil eg Redline . A lot of jap gearboxes are weak in fifth ( not nissan patrol) later cruisers changed gearboxes starting with top models first . HTSH

Hi Amiller2,
That sounds familliar!
Julian Voelcker was a huge help with parts and knows his stuff inside out.
I'd have a talk with him and go from there.
