Hilux trasmission temperature
 

I have Hilux 2004/50000km with manual transmission and wheel 235-85/R16. When I go long time on highway by speed 120-130km/hour and temperature 25C and highest, the transmission is very hot. Gear levels in cabin are hot and floor on cabin are hot. Hot is approximately 55C.
It is normal?

It does sound unusual to have such high temps coming from a manual gearbox.

Have you checked the condition of the oil from the gearbox and transfer case? If the gearbox is running that hot, it may be exceeding the ideal operating temp for the oils.

Also, are you getting any noise from the gearbox?

I would also be inclined to check the general cooling in the engine bay - is the engine running hot, are there any exhaust leaks, etc.

Finally, what is the condition of the clutch? Are you getting any slippage that could be generating the heat?

Hi Beba. Try what the others have suggested. AND...
I would say it is possible that there is insufficient air flow over the gearbox. Do you have some extra skid guards underneath? Also with the larger tyres your gearbox will be working a little harder, so this will make it run slightly hotter.
However, on some 4x4 vehicles if you remove the carpet and feel the floor over the gearbox it can get VERY hot on the motorway at high speeds.
My father has a little metal box set into his seat box (Land Rover) and he can place 2 tins of curry in this box, at the end of the journey the curry is ready!!
I would suggest changing the oil to a good make. Making sure there is nothing blocking the flow of air around the gearbox, and see if you can fit a curry warmer to the gearbox tunnel!!

First I will try to change oil. I am second owner and I don’t know when oil was changed.
I don’t have any strange noise and gear shift are easy.
I have big plate with holes under engine and transmission; perhaps on highway the airflow is not sufficient. I will try it put down.

Last two weeks I was in Albania. Hilux was great car for Albania roads. I have very good experience with local people on mountains. I was in Albania six times in last ten years.

I changed transmission oil. It was little over fired. Transmission is still hot on motor highway.
May bye it was normally, but I don’t know anybody with same car, to ask him.
I will try put down cover. It is under engine and transmission. But cover is aluminum plate with holes and around cover is a lot of space for air flow.
