4x4 big enough to sleep in comfortably
 

Any ideas for a commonly available 4x4 (in Chile) that is big enough for a 190cm tall person and a 175cm tall person to sleep in comfortably? Current ideas are a delica or truck with a shell, but those are both very rare.

Anyone seen Roof tents for sale in south america as that could work too?

Just from personal experience, I've spent a lot of time sleeping as a couple in both 110 & 109 landrovers and 80series Landcruisers.
In both cases we made simply plywood platforms with gear stashed underneath.
They both give you about as much room as a double bed.
I'd imagine trucks like the Nissan Patrol are similar.

Just replied to your other thread and was suggesting rav 4, vitaras, 2cvs and Renault 4s. Doh.
Knowing what the winds are like, a roof tent may not be very comfortable down south, but certainly more spacious than sleeping inside (keep that as the emergency gale accomodation?) Think you'll prob be limited to Toyota 80s (or poss 60s if they've not all gone north to Bolivia for retirement on the salt flats!) Or a pickup with a hardback on - hilux/navara/ranger...

Thanks for the advice. Have only seen 1 overpriced LC-80 for sale and all the trucks so far are of the 4 door short bed configuration. Hitting the big lots tomorrow to see what's around. Ideally we can work things out with Phil on his Iveco, but want to see what is here to compare.

Anyone have thoughts on a Hyundai Galloper? Apparently it is a hyundai built 1st gen montero, and there are a bunch around.

my old FJ60 Landcruiser had plenty of room to sleep in with rear seats folded down. but then all your gear would need to go somewhere else.

if you can get the diesel motor... the 4.2L gas motor, while nearly indestructible is a gas hog getting 12-14mpg. which is the only reason why I sold my old FJ-60. really miss the old girl... in the USA almost no diesel landcruisers are available. if I ever get another FJ60, will install a Cummins 4BT diesel.

a roof tent of course be deluxe. but a roof top luggage carrier like a spacecase or skybox could store your gear. giving you sleeping room inside. if you have the time to watch craigslist... they pop up for $150-$200 range

Just supposing the crew cab pickups you mentioned are the best chassis available to you (presumably you only want 2 seats?), could you make a bigger drop down tailgate into the extra tented sleeping length you need at night? So head in the covered pickup bit, maybe knees onwards outside, but in your home made tent thing??

As we shop, and discuss options (and look at patagonia weather, we are thinking we want a more camper style vehicle.
Any advice on finding a pickup-bed type camper in South america for any style of pickup?
We are also looking at buying a cargo van and installing a bed and basic cooking system.
