Just to report back.

I never put on rim locks on the bike for the mongolian trip this summer. The pressure was around 18-22 psi and I never had any problems. Dry or wet...Never had any problems on my old F650 either at same pressures - wet or dry...

No Nuts

I don't use the nuts on the valve stem - they are only there to fill a dead flat tube ..

This way if the tyre slips on the rim the valve will point away from the wheel centre. If it slips a lot it may even try to pull the valve stem inside the rim. I do keep an eye on where they point.

I don't run rim locks .. well not now. I used to .. one or two on the rear and one on the front. For touring and being lazy I don't reduce the tyre pressure untill I'm stuck or very very near stuck. This saves lots of time pumping tyres up after crossing things. It also helps conserve my energy, time and tyre life. If the tyre were sliping all the time - then I'd go back to running rim locks .. but that does not happen now .. What is that .. you say I'd get better preformance if I dropped my tyre pressure? Well that may be true .. but it needs time to do that .. and I'd be forever going up and down in pressure .. no I'd rather have a little less grip for some of the time and more time doing things other than servicing the bike.
