Cockpit problem LC4/ Adventure 2003

Hey,

I just started my trip and after 3000 km i got a problem. It's my speedometer/tripmaster. It jumps on different occasions from km/hr to ml/hr and i can't switch modes anymore. So i can't really see how many km i did on the bike. It's not a huge problem but quite anoying.
Anyone who had already a problem like that? Or is there for example a possibility to reset the whole thing?
Hope to hear from you guys.

Thanks!

Greetings, Bossit.:cool4:

Do you have a remote? They often fail and make similar problems. Try to disconnect it.
It's a 3-pin connector with blue-purple-grey cables.

You can also open the instrument to check for dirt/water.
Touratech can service it if nothing else works, usually around 120€.

I guess you are riding and using the original digi KTM speedo, a ADV-2003 would be equipped with it as standard.

well I have the Adv-Manual from 2007 and the Tripmaster as pdf... regarding the ADV-user manual there is no description on how to change from Mph to Kmh, but the Tripmaster manual for the remote switch got it in detail... well try the following...

go to the SPEED/H screen keep pressing the button "MODE" for 3 seconds to get in to the SETUP menu.
press the MODE button 10 times until the KMH/MPH starts flashing.
press the button "+" for a short time to change the desired mode of KMH.
press "+" for KMH or "-" for MPH.
after 20 seconds without pressing any button the change will be saved automaticly and turns back to the SPEED/H screen after.
you are able to save the change straight away by holding the MODE button for a few seconds until the screen change back to SPEED/H instead of waiting for 20 seconds...
Job done...

ohh yea just to keep you mind at rest... the covered MPH will be saved and would be translated correctly over to KMH, so no KM/MH is gone lost for you regarding that the covered distance can't be changed at all, it's just a different number displayed in MPH or KMH...

hope that helps, had to do a quick and dirty translation from the German manual... good luck

I'll try

Hey guys,

Thanks for the quick reply! Spooky i'll try what youtranslated. But the other prob is that i also can't change modes anymore between the 2 tripmasters. Now it's on the F of fuel reserve and it ain't possible to change it to anything else. Alibaba, i got a remote on the handelbars, but that ain't working as well. Not even on the mode button on the speedo.
But i'll try as well to disconnect the remote and will check for water or dirt.
I'll keep you posted how i go. But it's not goanna be 2morrow as i stay at the campsite in Kiev which is out of town. Anyway, thanks again!

doesn't sounds very good... a few errors at ones ?

just a thought....
did you check the little battery that is needed to operate the tripmaster ?
you know the little button cell type thing in the Speedo compartment... may that's gone flat... may one reason why your tripmaster MODE operation don't work any more...
well only a guess... but worth a try to get a new battery for the speedo.

Battery for the tripmaster?

Hey,

I tried yesterday to change the ml/hr to km/hr. Well it worked guys, for now. But only by pushing the 'mode' button for about 20 sec's. But i'm sure it'll change again when i start riding 2morrow. Anyway, where should i find that battery in the tripmaster? Doesn't it just work on the mains from the battery?
If the small battery would fail, then i guess tripmaster would return to zero, no?
I guess i got to take it all apart to get to that battery?
Hope to hear from you!
Thanks again hey!

grate news so far...

about the battery, well I must admit it's not that user friendly to change the little bastard..

you have to demount the speedo out of it's dashboard, undo the two small nuts that holding the instrument in place.... the little battery is in a little compartment on the underneath side of the speedo, like changing the battery in a modern wrist watch I'm afraid... but not a big deal.... ones you got the speedo loose you will see a bigger round flat slotted plastic screw lit that seals the compartment for the battery, you can open it with a coin.

regarding the manual:
the battery you want is a "DURACELL CR2430" equivalent to a "VARTA CR2430" it's a "Li-Mn 3-volt" should be a very common type of cell battery, found in any electronic or photographic shop.

I missed out one of your question... well yes the speedo operating over the main 12v bike battery, but the tripmaster switch needs this little additional cell battery for proper work of the MODE function for some reason.. you could try disconnecting the tripmaster switch and use the two buttons on the speedo independently, you don't necessarily need the tripmaster-switch at all to operate the speedo it's purely for comfort only and for some special additional functions of the unit.

I don't know, but I think the battery is sealed by a O-ring from the environments, and can not getting damp or wet... well imagine your Adv is build in 2003... I guess your cell battery is seven years old by now... survived a few cold winter and lots of vibrations... not that bad is it... but at some stage... it eventually retires sooner or later...
after all I'm sure your problem that suddenly appeared as a big problem can be sorted quite easily...

hope you get it all sorted... you are not out of this world... you are at the HUBB... :welcome:

good luck

I have to update my previous post's.... sorry for misleading the informations with the battery :oops2:

OK, yesterday I tripped over a picture of a LC4, LC8 speedo I found on eBay...
well the modern 2003 Adv-speedo dose not require a separate battery :thumbup1:
there is no compartment on the underneath side at all !

the info about the cell battery comes from the tripmaster manual for 625 LC4 Super-Comp and SC Supermoto from 2002... they use the older digi speedo,,,,
nether less the operation info for the tripmaster are the same...

again sorry for misleading you... you don't need to demount your Adv-speedo to find out that there is no hidden compartment....:blushing:

The buttons on my 03 speedo display started to get hard to operate so I took it apart. The plastic parts that operate the switches were loose so I glued them back in place & gave the contacts a little squirt of WD40. Fiddly to do but much cheaper than a new one. All good now.

Cheers

Problem solved!!

Hey guys,

Ecxuse for getting back to you all so late but anyhow. I wanted to thank you all for your quick answers. So what i did was taking the remote apart and than saw that it was cracked(due to vibrations?). So tried a few other things but at the end disconnected the remote and till now everything works fine. Didn't know that the remote could crack. Thought it was made "vibration-proof". :taz:

Thank you,

Bossit. :-)

AliBaba 23 Aug 2010 12:11

Yes they crack and make weird faults.
You can try to fix it (and glue it so it gets watertight) but I don't think a new one is expensive.
