It's seated. The pop is clue #1 and spinning the wheel while watching the moulded line that should parallel to the rim all the way round confirms it.

also - what are the implications if it is not seated correctly or the bead hasn't popped properly?
will it kill me?
i'm waiting for some advice before i put it back on the bike. . .
