Gt550 Help

Hi all, i need some help with alternatives to alloy wheels on the venarable Gt 550, does anybody know another pair of wheels that will fit (spoked). Preferablely with wheel sizes to fit dual purpose tyres. Alternatively dual purpose tyres to fit the ally wheels, many thanks Floyd

mate, I commuted on one of these during a very long winter up here. if you're thinking of modifying if for mild off-roading, pick up a cheap XT or something instead. I remember the suspension not being altogether great, even on the road.

I think you'd need to change the mud guards (front at least), which will not be straight-forward, to fit dual purpose tyres, as they're quite tight against the road tyres, no?

sorry that doesn't get you a new set of wheels, but modifying a bike to a purpose it's not meant for gets expensive.

nothing is impossible, but starting from the best possible base is a good idea. I may have got you wrong though, what's yer plans?

btw, if you want recommendations for tyres, post the size of your wheels. many people will not have come across the gt550.

That's the second time you have helped me out Dougie, my previous post was a bit misleading as the chances of me doing a large trip on a cycle are not really on but i want to get one that will last, doing about 90 miles a week. As for the GT550, I am getting it at the weekend, it will be going for another mot today. P reg 20k £600. I think i was being a bit of a numpty about the tyres, thought they might look good. I would still like to do a conversion to spokes though. I have registered for the travellers meet down south in August. The GT is a cheap tourer, knowing me it will soon be upgraded, so perhaps it's not ideal to spend a load of hard earned!!. Hoping for a decent trip in a couple of years time, it will give me time to get sorted and find an ideal bike, atb Floyd

best thing you can spend money on with your gt550 is fuel, and getting in some touring miles. then, with the benefit of experience, you'll just gravitate towards the right bike for you.

if you make it up this way, mail the community and hopefully we'll be able to coincide a public-house meet with you passing through.

enjoy the '550...

cheers,
Doug
