Engine braking & gear ratios
Which gives more engine braking, closer or wider gear ratios?

It's the gearing itself that counts, not how close one gears ratio is to the gears either side of it.
You'll generally find that close ratio 'boxes are suitable for revvy engines where you don't want the bike dropping out of its powerband when you change gear i.e. MX bikes. Enduro bikes which look similar generally have slightly wider ratios as they tend to have a broader, more flexible spread of power. |
