What Motorbike tyres in iceland and any other advice

Hi
I'm heading to Iceland middle of June on my motorbike (GSA), I'm planning to do the ring road, and side excursions depending on conditions and weather.

Is there any tips or advice , in particular , what's the best tyres to use . will standard road tyres suffice or would it be better to go with a intermediate tyre.

thanks in advance for any replies

tyres for iceland

Hei hi222, we drove Iceland, northern Ring, last year.

The Ring Road is all asphalt now ( there are always repairs and diversions however), and the side roads vary from smooth to really wild. There are some river crossings too, so solo riding on road tyres is not advisable.

As you wrote, the frequently changing weather conditions will decide. Be aware that rain in the mountains leads to runoff, rivers rise rapidly, you can be cut off. Wind can also be a problem.

There are probably more tourists than beds, so either book accomodation in advance or camp.

The most common damage to vehicles is small stones thrown up by other vehicles, lights and windscreens are vulnerable. Always use eye protection, even at low speeds.

That was the gloom. The good bit is it is a fantastic experience, there are thermal springs most places for bathing, and good food is available but expensive.

Icelanders are generally very friendly, fiercly proud of their country.

Safe travels,

Peter, in Oslo

thanks

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for the reply. sounds like an intermediate tyre maybe the order of the day.

Accommodation and stops are all planned and booked so all good there.

I ended up in a river with my gsa from mountain flow off in Argentina a couple of years ago so hoping to avoid that little experience again, lol.

I'm sure itll be a great trip, I'm looking forward to it,

Cheers,

Steve

I'm also heading to Iceland but in July. I was thinking of a TKC70 or K60 Scout. Any advice?
