Day trips from Reykjavik?
Hello all,
My wife and I are planning to spend a week in Iceland in early July and would like to do some riding for at least a couple days. While it would of course be fun to go on a tour, sleeping somewhere new each night, we are also considering doing day trips from a base in/ near Reykjavik. So really I have a few questions. What would be a good 3-4 day loop of easier riding? It would be fun to go on unpaved roads although we would want to avoid stream crossings and sand since my wife will be riding on my bike with me. Is there enough fun riding near Reykjavik to do 3 day trips, returning to the city each night? We would really like to make our way to Akureyri, since part of my family tree can be traced back to that town. Would a trip there and back in 3 days be worthwhile, I.e. not just buzzing along a freeway for hours on end with nothing to look at? Thanks in advance for any advice! |
Places that are close to Reykjavik:
Blue Lagoon http://actiontouring.com/pic/IS2003_0076.jpg Geysir and Gullfoss http://actiontouring.com/pic/IMGP4043.jpg Eyjafjallajøkull (Google it) http://actiontouring.com/pic/IMGP4212.jpg Akureyri via Kjølur: It might be hard to reach Akureyri and get back to Reykjavik in three days. If you decide to do it you can go via the Kjølur-route (F35). It's gravel, but easy and there are bridges over the rivers. The route passes Geysir and Gullfoss but might be a bit crowdy (in Icelandic terms) I can't remember if it's possible to sleep inside at Kjølur, and I'm not sure if they have petrol. Typical part of the Kjølur-route: http://actiontouring.com/pic/IS2003_0099.jpg Crowded hot spring at Kjølur: http://actiontouring.com/pic/IS2003_0112.jpg Girl enjoying the scenery at Kjølur; http://actiontouring.com/pic/IS2003_0110.jpg There are other options via Laugafell and 826 to Akureyri but you will proabably find F26 to Laugafell hard and it has several rivercrossings. |
Motorcycles rental in Iceland
Here is another option that you can look at Iceland Rental Bikes I think that it worth the try.
