Cycling Iceland May 2014.....!

Iceland again.........26th May-6th June riding my Thorn Sherpa EXP mountain bike and this will be my third cycling trip to Iceland.

Hope it's decent weather but i'm happy to take what comes and a cycle trip in Iceland is always refreshing and challenging!

See you on the road there!

happy cycling

Hi Farmer Parker,

Cycled there a couple of times myself, and did a one month trip with my son in the Land Rover. Iceland is simply breathtakingly beautiful!:thumbup1:

Farmer,

I won't be bicycling, but will be motorcycling Iceland same time you're there; let's coordinate at least a meal/drink in Reyk... I'll be arriving at KEF on the morning of the 27th and leaving on the m/c on 1 June for ten days..........

where are you staying in Reyk? I stay in hostels when abroad, so your experience with the many in Reyk will be appreciated.

Hi Zigy,

It'd be great to see you on the road and meet up for a beer etc although I must admit that i'm always jealous when someone passes me effortlessly on a motorbike when i'm cycling hard into an Icelandic headwind.

The main hostel is adjacent to the campsite next to the swimming pool although I tend to head out of the 'city' as it takes me most of the day to ride what you can ride in around an hour on your GS...........I've not stayed in the hostel there only the campsite but I've used many campsites, hostels and small hotels around the island over the years.

I had my BMW R1150GSA around Iceland in 2005 and again in 2006 but came on the ferry from Aberdeen in Scotland via the Shetland and Faroe Islands which were spectacular to ride around and I still go to Shetland often as its just an overnight ferry from here!

Which way are you heading when you leave Reykjavik?

FP.

Hi Farmer Palmer,
Its not long now until your trip. Seeing as you've been there now a few times is their anything you would consider essential kit for the trip and wouldn't do with out?
Thanks Mac.

Difficult question to answer

Good quality clothing and camping gear and I always carry some spare food with me incase the weather turns and I get stuck in one place for a few days!

Oh and a sense of humour is always handy after those incessant headwind days!

mac90 13 Apr 2014 21:50

thanks for that.

Hi,

I also would like to know how your trip went. Was it what you expected?

Cheers from Namibia,

Gee

Having just done my first 2 days on the road up here struggling with winds and cold ones at that. Having passed a fair few cyclists on the road all I can say is you lot must be loopers or just really determined. But fair play to you all I wouldn't dream of doing it.

Cycled around 500 miles on this trip but the weather was dreadful sometimes with strong and dangerous head/crosswinds and driving rain so I cut short my trip and took the bus back to Sellfoss then Reykjavik and hired a 275,000km Suzuki Grand Vitara from www.cheapjeeps.is six days for around 210 Euros and toured the Westfjords which were very cold snowy and wet as usual..............Arctic fox Centre at Sudavik was good as was Dynjandi foss which I hadn't seen for some time.

I also cycled out to the ferry for the Vestmannaeyjar which is always worth a visit with its new museum where houses have been excavated from the 1973 Heimaey eruption.

I also visited friends on a few farms near Skogarfoss. I ended up up helping with the milking aswell which is a bit of a busmans holiday for me and always good to see how farms work in other countries.

After the weather improved I got back on the bike for a few days and rode the Golden Circle 'again' and it was great to visit Geysir and Gullfoss at midnight when there's no-one there and you can have the place to yourself!!!

Next year i'll bus it out to where I cut this trip short and continue my journey from there(Skafafjall)

Lessons learned from this trip were that my trusty waterproofs aren't as good as they used to be and that you should always try and travel in the direction that gets the wind behind you...........12 miles in two and a half hours isn't much fun but its character building!!

Looking forward to next years trip!
