UK Meeting Update 2008
The UK meetings page hasn't been updated for a while so I thought I'd fill in a few blanks for you.
We've had over 20 presenters volunteer so far to put on a show for this years meeting some old, some new. Regulars Chris Scott, Simon McCarthy, Sam Manicom, Tim Cullis, Craig Carey Clinch are all confirmed as well as new shows from David Lomax, Tiffany Coates, Chris Bright to name but a random few. New names Richard Miller - Africa on an Enfield, Charles Fellowes - UK to OZ and Leigh Mathias - Newfoundland to Argentina. Topics range from - UK to Australia, Morocco, The Silk Route, China, U.S.A. Spain, Africa and informative sessions on, what to take, travelling as a couple, Bike preparation, and whats the best tent? Walter Colebatch was the first person to be allowed into China unescorted in 1994 and his is likely to be a well attended show. David Lomax can always be relied on to give a funny and professional show (he's doing 3 shows this year) and my abiding memory is of a photo of a bike attempting to jump an impossible ramp with 'The A team' music playing in the background. More time will be given to Paul Gowen from the RAC this year as although his session on Carnets was repeated several times over the weekend most of the time the room was full and over ran. There maybe a chance to make a 10 minute appointment with Paul at the meeting to discuss fees etc on a one to one basis. More details to follow as I find out more. Tim Cullis's talk on Garmin and using Mapsource, his tech session, over ran by nearly 2 hours and could have gone on past closing time - such was the interest. More time needed I think! The rideouts are still going ahead this year with one major change. Registration will be on the day on a first come first served basis. We are no longer continuing with the register in advance system. Much easier for all involved I think. More details later. F.Y.I. I myself organise the UK meeting - anything to do directly with the meeting is my responsibility - venue - presenters -facilities - rideouts etc Sam Manicom is once again organising the volunteers this year. Theres a rota system in place so if you do volunteer you can opt for as little or as much as you want. We still need a few more volunteers. Thankyou! Grant is the guy in charge of the whole damn lot! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/meetings/UK2008.php contact me via the meetings page or pm. or post in this thread contact Sam to volunteer via Grant. Its pretty much guaranteed that this years meet will be a sell out again - 500 people - as with over 4 months to go we already have 300 folk booked in. Dont think about it, 3-6th July and get your money sent off today! Oh and don't forget Tori Lang and her 'Yoga for Bikers' session! See you there ! |
Hi Glynn
You will see us there, us meaning my wife and I on our 1150GS with the ZA numberplate. Hope the weather is great, never been to UK, but heard so many bad stories about weather and rain etc. I see Chris Bright will be there too. He might not remember me, but on his first RTW travels down in South Africa he stayed over at my place in a town called Paarl, 50km from Cape Town, I think it was back in 2000. You can almost say that he was my insparation to travel the world as well. It will be good to meet him again and shake hands with the man who 'intriduced' me to this superb way of life. Regards Johan & Charmaine |
Chris Bright here
Hi Johan
It'll be great to meet up again after all these years. Really looking forward to it. Chris PS. Sent you a PM |
Good weather coming!
Hi Johan,
Looking forward to meeting you both. We have had several South Africans attend the meeting over the years so you'll be in good company, but not sure if we've had any S.A. registered bikes attend, yours may be the first. All the stories you have heard about the UK weather are true, particularly this week, but heat and sun are guaranteed for July..... Glynn |
En route to he UK

Charmaine, Johan, if you're travelling on your bike all the way from Dubai to he UK, you're bound to pass Munich on your trip. You're welcom to stay here overnight, en ons gaan lekker gesels. Orright? Hans from KZN :thumbup1: |
Hi Hans
We do not plan to go through Germany. We've been there last year (car) and will go back in the future, it realy is a beautifull country with friendly people. Our route will take us through Iran, Turkey, Italy and France. After the HUMM we will go to Scotland and must be back in London by the 14th (July)to freight the bike to USA, where our real adventure will start, driving all the way south to Argintina. Sould be done in 2010, depends on the money (as always) If you know where I can get a BMW box/crate, please forward the contact to me, so that I can get it delivered in time at my freight company in Windsor. (Walker Freight) Chris, then I will see you in UK at the HUMM. Look out for the 1150Gs Adv with the South African number, that'll be me. Regards Johan |

Not what a SA nor OZie would call heat and sun ... it was a triffle damp in 2007. --------------- On sessions that over run .. try breaking them up into segments .. eg the GPS ;- One on how the GPS system works .. would not take 15 minutes to cover the basics of that. Then one on Garmins mapsource program Then one on the garmin/garmin compatable maps ? Then one on POI One on tracks/routes.. ? Just a thought - what does Tim think? ------------------- The Yoga for bikes is really good .. if you have not been then go to this one. |

 Yeah,Frank was too long in the UK ... Actually I nearly drowned. After leaving the HU meeting I headed for Wales. That was even worse :eek3: @Johan- a real pity, but such is life. I won't be attending the meeting in Ripley this year, because I'll visit the first ever HU meeting in Germany. Ag nee man, miskien kan ons 'n bier drink so in twee jaar in SA? :thumbup1: Enjoy your trip! Hans |

Sorry, forgot... Try to get a crate from a BMW dealer in the UK. They usually give them away for free since the crates for the new bikes are only meant for one-way use. |
Were nearly full up !
Worked a draft timetable out today and we have over 50 people who have volunteered this year to put on a show or demonstration. Thank you very much !
The timetable will be posted on the meetings page in the next month or so. Unless any presenters drop out,we are not looking for any more folk to present this year. You can still apply using the form but you will be put on a reserve list at the moment. If you were thinking of applying to do a presentation why not do it in Germany at this years first Horizons German meeting. If you have registered and still not paid send the money off now please! This years meeting WILL sell out in a week or two and its the first 500 who have PAID and REGISTERED. Sam is still looking for a few more volunteers for various tasks - hours to suit you. Contact Grant through the website if you want to know more. Just having a look through the topics we have shows on this year and South America is very popular... a few years back it was Australia/Africa... think in the next few years there will be a lot of shows from the East... Fashion Huh! Glynn |

From the 2007 trip - got back to Sydney and the Quarantine guy wants to see my boots .. they commented "they are clean!" my thoughts were - what do you expect? Washed by British weather they will be clean. |

This one cannot be as wet surely? Mind, it's never been the same since El Nino was mentioned. |
The latest timetable is now available. It can be viewed by going to the Meetings page on the left hand side, then UK meeting and clicking on 'schedule posted here'

One place up for grabs........ |
Not long now...
All organisers will be on site from Wednesday morning. So please don't send any emails regarding the event after Tuesday evening. If you need to contact myself - 07976 214198 (call or text) or the venue, Lumb Farm - 01773 744 299 We don't NEED to know you can't attend but it is a nice courtesy, and may ensure we can hold your entrance fee over till next year. We're booked solid with record numbers of presenters, traders and BMW's ;) attending. Check out the latest timetable at the venue Glynn |
people who cannot attend.....
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I can get a ticket to this meeting?
Is there a list where you can put your contact details and be contacted by anyone who cannot attend?? Too late?? Cheers orrin |
Sorry Orrin, we are FULL - and have a long waiting list.
We really don't want to close the doors, we'd like to have everyone who wants to come get in, but the facilities are limited and we are already bursting at the seams, as anyone who was there last year could tell you, when we had 100 less than we have squeezed in this year. Food availability, camping space, plus the all important fire regs, and a survey of attendees last year, say that's it. There will be a VERY limited number of day passes available, but NO camping allowed, bikes parked outside the gates. (Any bikes left overnight will probably disappear due to the hooligans in the neighbourhood... ;) ) When the day passes are gone, they're gone. Starting Thursday at 10. We ARE looking for larger facilities for next year, but don't hold a lot of hope - we DO plan THREE events next year, if we can secure the locations over the next few months. DO check out the Summer HUMP - details on the meetings page. Wish I had better news! We're trying... |
Back in 1993 I re-call attending a HUGE biker meeting at the Bath & West Showground. This particular venue could easily handle 1000+ HU-member attendees - prolly up to > 5,000 wouldn't be a problem. All the facilities you could wish for are right there too.
These sites are around that's for sure - BUT, I wonder what the hire costs would be? |
Going to be a wet one !
Well, it looks like its going to be a repeat of last year !!!!!!!!
Im siiinging in the raaaain !! http://www.tedmagnum.com/gallery/alb...001/Ripley.JPG |

hubber down
A biker was knocked down as he was leaving Lumb farm this morning (10 ish). I didn't actually see it but the police on the scene said he hit a car that turned straight across the road in front of him.
The car was driven by a 75 year old fella who 'didn't see him'. The biker was Paul Therma?? from Northumberland on a DRZ. He sustained a broken leg, collar bone plus other injuries. If I can be of help (I live Nottingham) with bike storage, bike kit etc he is welcome to make use of my garage. Susan has my number. Another great weekend, thanks to all involved. Simon PS I have a trailer |
Sorry mate i didn't see you
Thanks to everyone who stopped to help, I wasn't really aware of things going on around me but I knew there were plenty of you lot that stopped to help. I'm back home now and considering what happened I was lucky to only suffer a broken left collarbone, broken right hand and two very bruised but thankfully not broken legs. Can't write a lot about the incident primarily because I only remember a big bang then the odd sensation of being in the air with my legs over my head, after that is pretty much a blank until being in the back of the ambulance, but also because there will be a police prosecution going on, thankfully for the other guy to worry about, not me. don't know anything about the bike yet, the annoying thing being i'd only had it for 3 weeks on the sunday and the new v5 was waiting for me when i got home. thanks for the offer of transport but the bike is under care of the police at the moment and won't be released until they've finished with it.
thanks, paul |
Thanks for the update Paul.
Heard about your off - you always fear the worst when you hear this sort of thing so it's good to have the facts from the horse's mouth. Wishing you and your bike a speedy recovery back to full health. Fil |
Paul,
Glad you made it back home. Knackered collar bone - the bikers injury of choice. Si |
Hi Paul,
I was one of those who stopped and you looked in good hands with the Rapid Response Paramedic. I suggested that the bike not be moved until the police arrived, so there would be no arguments about who hit who where! Recover quick matey and make sure that the idiot who caused the accident gets all he deserves. |
glad to here your alright i hope you and your bike are back on the road soon .
did you go on the off road ride out on Saturday if so i was the guy on the blue serow |
Best Wishes and a speedy recovery Paul from all at Horizons Unlimited Towers
Glynn |
Glad you made it ok and by now are on the mend. Hope the bike dos'nt take to long to sort out.
C U on the road |
