Scottish Mini Meet
Hiya!
Just to let you all know that there is another Scottish Mini Meet coming up... This time it is in the Glencoe area which will provide us with everything that we need... a campsite, camp fire, a pub (if it's really wet!) and great roads! When... Friday 15th October - Sunday 17th October Location... The Red Squirrel Campsite http://www.redsquirrelcampsite.co.uk/ £8 pppn Showers 50p (although water is often hot anyway!?!) Camp fires are allowed until 11pm, though sometimes later depending on who is on duty! We will need to buy some dry kindling & firewood (a £ or so each!?!), to get the fire started both nights! If it is dry (ish...), everyone could eat & drink around the campfire. Otherwise there is a pub 10 minutes walk away... Nearest Pub... Clachaig Inn Glencoe Hotels - Clachaig Inn offers hotel accommodation in Glencoe, the Scottish Highlands Good varied food menu. So who's coming... so far... Beej & Chris Doug Rob Jake Looking forward to some more replies, Beej n Chris |
Its Mikes birthday that weekend and we have plans to go to Skye, but plans are meant to be changed and this seems like a good cause. However I will have to persuade him that camping at Squirrel is better than a night in 5* luxury in Skye, it will be a difficult job but one that I will give my full attention to when he gets home from work.
Its a special 1 with a "0" on the end so I may have to supply birthday cake. Just noticed its the start of the Beer Festival at the pub might be a busy place. |
I hope you all have a good time at The Red Squirrel site, or Leacantium as it was once called.
I have many fond memories of that place, as well as the Bunkhouse just down the road, where our bikes were parked, with us, in the barn. There was no glass in the windows so it was a bit fresh in winter.....:freezing: I wonder if Sol is still there? Have a great time one and all!!! |
Tell Mike that we could have a Birthday Party! :happybday: With a big cake and nice beer! Also if he wants a comfy bed then you could always stay at the pub! I'm sure that you'd manage to get a few Birthday drinks too! It be great see you both again after both of our travels!
Will check with the pub regarding the Beer Festival! Looks like it would be good for the Beer though! Thanks to Caminando for the best wishes... I'm sure we'll have a great time! Beej n Chris |
Hi Beej
Long time I had been away from HU. It is my mistake. Glencoe meet is a great opportunity to catch up with you all. I am now in India. On my return to UK next week will check my schedule and plan to participate. Thanks Chandra |
Well in true biker form Mike has been persuaded/decided to swap the 5* in Skye for the tent in Glencoe so we WILL be there. Trying to get the couple we toured with this summer to come along, and another couple who want to give touring a try.
Beej He is NOT getting the option of the hotel a. it will be busy with the Beer Festival b. miss out on the camping atmosphere. Do you think it would be a good idea to book out pitch or have you organised that already so we can get a space big enough and where we can have the fire as not all the pitches are allowed fires or that was the case last time we visited. |
Well I am seriously thinking about coming along to my first HU event! We've just had a baby so I doubt if headquarters will let me out for the weekend, but I may be able to blag a Saturday night.
Also I've never been over to Fort Bill before so I'll get working on my brownie points. Can you put me down as a definite maybe? |
I will do my best
Hi Beej
The dates are just ten days after my wrist op - so i definately won't make it on the Bike - I will just have to see how it goes - Angus has said he will take me down but it will really depend how quick I am mending - maybe I will come down in the car - At this stage I think its safe to say i cant really confirm until a few days before - Bruce |
Chandra it'd be great to see you again... it's been a long time since Ullapool! Hope your schedule works out.
It's good to hear that Mike will be joining us for his Birthday Weekend! Glad to hear that your persuasions worked Liz! Campsite says there is no problem with pitches for that time of year... they consider large groups 50+... there are no set pitches and lots of fire pits so I'm sure we will get a fire even if all the tents aren't next to each other. We will get in touch with the campsite once we have a better idea of numbers. oldminiclub - your down as a definite maybe... we hope it's a definite though! Just let us know which night you can make it for so that we know to look out for you! Congrats by the way on the wee one! No worries Bruce... we both hope that the op goes well and that you recover quickly so that you can come along! In this instance we will allow a car! All are welcome, even if it's just for 1 night or for a run on the Saturday! The more the merrier! Beej n Chris |
I'll arrange the time off today,

So Mike which day is your birthday? I can already think of a great present but I'm not sure how to strap it to the back of the bike. |
Please count me in - I'd love to come along.
|
aussigeezer (Mike), great to hear that you've managed to get the time off work... just make sure that your get your front bearings replaced!
oldminiclub - great news! Which night is Mrs oldminiclub letting you out for? Ben555 - will be great to finally meet you! oldminiclub asked a very good question... Mike... what day is your Birthday? Look like it will be a great weekend! |
Mike is gonna be 50 :D on the 16th
|
I've heard that the whisky can be a bit dogy at the local pub. So I am willing to come along ,and, at great risk to myself, beer test it for you.
Rory |
As Mike's birthday is the 16th which according to my calendar is the saturday I'll aim to get over to glencoe by midday on saturday, possibly in time for a quick afternoon tour round the area?
|
Hi Beej
I am back in Inverness. I am working on Friday till 5pm. So Will start before 9am on Saturday and drive down to glencoe. It will take about two three hrs depending on the traffic. My tent skills are poor (sadly haven't done camping before). But will buy a tent and bring along. Failing which I will book an accomodation nearby. Should I send the moneys before hand to you? Chandra beerchug |
Rory - glad to hear that your able to come along and make sure that the Whisky is ok!
Chandra - Good to hear that your able to come along on the Saturday. Remember that if your buying camping gear to get a warm sleeping bag as it could be chilly and to bring thermals. We have a spare tent which you can borrow for the night if you want so you would just need to buy a sleeping mat etc... The campsite can be paid by either cash or cheque on arrival with the owners, £8 per person per night. Other accommodation nearby is either in the pub - 10 min walk from campsite -, or in the youth hostel - 5 min walk from campsite / 15 min walk from pub Mike - can't believe your gonna be 50! Blimey! |
Please add me to the list:scooter:
I'll probally leave Edinburgh early Friday afternoon :thumbup1: See ya all there Paul |

Beej , I have done some sorting with the Germans and it looks like I may be able to get up for the weekend - but really need to head off home very early Sunday to at least put in a show before they leave and say hello. At present the back is also playing up quite bad and causing me problems riding if there are strong winds this really affects my neck injury and this is another factor so all I can say is I should be at the meet but depending on the weather and how settled the back is we will see. If I get along I will be up there early afternoon Friday. Fingers crossed. Jake.
|
Paul - great to hear that your able to come along!
Liz - Mike's allowed to be insufferable all weekend... it's his 50th Birthday! Jake - sounds like you've been doing some good negotiating! Will be great to see you if you make it... hope your back gets better again! Just keep us informed! Yeah... only 3 weeks to go! Beej |
Just checking out the route, looks like there will be a stop at the Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum and apparently the Real Food Cafe opposite does good food. The Real Food Cafe
|
Hey Beej, I've ordered my parts, and should have everything squared by the end of next week, starting to wonder if I've made the right decision, Just remembered I don't like being cold!!
|
Would'nt be fair on Rorry to check out dodgy whiskey on his own:nono:gona try and be there on fri night, but got something on,onSat.Be good to see you all.:thumbup1:

We came home thru Glencoe yesterday roadworks at Ba bridge using a temporary bridge and some traffic lights. We were there around 1630 not that many hold ups just keeping you all updated.
|
Hi, i am hoping to come along to my first HU meet. I was in Glencoe at the weekend and the temperature dropped to -4, so pack those thermals. Andy B
|
Angus - great to hear that your able to come and help check out the whisky on the Friday night... will be great to see you again.
Andy - good to hear that your able to come along to your first HUBB meet! Good point about bringing thermals... they will be needed! However... we always have fun... even if it rains! 2 weeks to go! Looking forward to it... just need to get the bike's serviced... been due since we got back from Russia! Ops! Beej |
Think we might invest in new sleeping bags for the weekend, heard good stuff about Nanok, anyone else got some suggestions, would prefer synthetic filling 4 season.
|
Just had a quick shuftie at the calendar and I could be up for this one!
:scooter: |

Hi Liz - have heard good things about Nanok too... we have Rab feather ones which are great (mine is only 2 season but is ok in winter with a blanket, Chris has a lovelly 4 season one! He also has a synthetic one which we use in the summer!)
Debseed - hope your able to come along... would be great to meet you! Chandra - of course you can borrow the tent. Just make sure that you get a warm sleeping bag and some thermals! Yeah! Beej |
The nanok bags look good, they do one that goes down to -45. Might be enough for Glencoe.
Or you could get the Ray Mears edition...Ray Mears/Nanok Sleeping Bag - Osprey, Sleeping Bags |
am nearly sure i'll come up for the meet, will let you know deffo on tues 12th, if that is ok.
denny. |
Are there any plans for Saturday daytime? I will be leaving home at 8am and hopefully should be at Glencoe by Midday.
I can always try and meetup out on the road somewhere, or else I can just be the in pub... |
Not this time Folks!
Just to let you know - I wont be able to make it - had op on my hand last week and don't get stitches out until Friday - still pretty sore - have a 50th birthday party to attend on Saturday - so will have to miss out on this one
Hope you all have a great time - will see you all again in the spring - will arrange something again at Cannich all being well - have a drink for me Chris/Beej - loved the photos by the way - looks like you will have to wait a little longer for the Serow test ride. Doug - hopefully Angus will make Friday and you will get a chance to see if Africa in Jan is still viable - we have end of January booked off. Bruce (Chizz) |
Hi All... just confirming the details for Friday!
Have spoken to the pub regarding food orders... just turn up, find a table and order... food available until 8pm in the bar & 9pm in the lounge. The pub will probably be busy so for those who are wanting to eat out the earlier you go the shorter the wait will be for your food! We are expecting to leave Edinburgh at 2pm... ish! Should take us about 2 1/2 hours. Anyone who wants to travel up together from Edinburgh please let us know so that we can arrange a meeting point. So depending on when your leaving or where your coming from you may get there before us! First person that gets to the campsite please choose an area with a good fire pit! Also... feel free to get the fire going.... hee hee There is a shop in Glencoe village which sells basic supplies and dry kindling & wood and a larger Co-Op in Ballachulish which opens later. Hopefully the weather will be dry so we will be able to enjoy drinks around the campfire... we have whisky! I'm happy to give people my mobile number as a contact... please PM me with your mobile number and I will text you back! Location... The Red Squirrel Campsite http://www.redsquirrelcampsite.co.uk/ Postcode for GPS is PH49 4HX. £8 pppn (Cash or Cheques). So who's coming... looks like... Beej n Chris Doug? Liz & Mike (& friends?) Chandra (Sat only) Oldminiclub (Sat only) Aussiegeezer - Mike Ben Rory (with whisky?) Paul Angus (Fri only) Andy Debseed Diehard Looking forward to it! See you all there, Beej n Chris |
I'm stuck in London....
|
Hi all,
Just Mike and me on the Friday night and our mate arrives on the Saturday oldminiclub. The others think October is way too cold for bikes and bikes with tents is a HUGE big NOOOOOOOOOO so guess they are gonna miss out. Heading into town tomorrow to pick up birthday cake and maybe some balloons and gas to inflate them. Sleeping bags to collect, went for Mountain Hardwear they have a great small pack size down side a reasonably high purchase £ but hey ho what price warmth. Camp fire and alcohol, will have a hunt around for some Orkney Port. |
Milimut 1 If your brave enough to harness it I think you will find there will be plenty gas available on Saturday morning for your balloons after the evenings entertainment and alcohol abuse on Friday night. Jake.
|
That's the bike loaded up.
Leaving home about 5.30 am:thumbdown:, heading for the ferry at Tarbert Harris. Driving down through Skye to Armadale and the ferry to Mallaig. Then on to Fort Bill and Glencoe.:mchappy: Should be there early afternoon , Rory |
Birthday cake bought, no room for the gas so gonna be manual inflation of the balloons.
Stuff all out on the sofa waiting to go in the panniers still 1 more work shift to go. Found the bottle of Orkney Port beer |
Only 1 Sleep!
Hi All,
We are just trying to remember what we've not packed! Oh... well... I'm sure we'll find out soon enough! Bruce - Sorry to hear that you wont make this one. We may stay in the area longer, if we do we'll get in touch! Liz - Looking forward to the birthday cake! Do we get to give the birthday boy his dumps? 50 could hurt! Rory - early start... ouch! You may well be the first person at the campsite... choose a nice pitch with a good fire pit and a bit of shelter if poss! mmm... Dougie - sorry to hear that your stuck in London... best go and get on with your work so that you can come out to play soon! Hope that everyone has managed to find the thermals! Beej |
sorry gang, i'll have to drop out, hope to meet you all at the next one.
denny. |
I am getting ready to leave tomorrow before 9am. Sleeping bag, mat, liner and thermals ready.
