Mini meet Brighton - Sussex (UK)

Are there any overlanders in and around Brighton, Sussex who fancy meeting up for a few beers?

I know there are a few people scattered around, as I met a couple in Colombia a few years back, but lost there details while still on the road.

If you're planning your first trip I'm also happy to help, as it's always good to catch up with like minded people over a beer or two.

Personally I'm looking into a trip to Africa in the next few years.

Iain.

Tim Cullis 16 Sep 2008 14:04

I'm in Eastbourne, so Brighton's only a hop away. I might be away for some of October, but otherwise free.

Tim

danward79 16 Sep 2008 16:35

Hi,

We are in Hove and were planning a trip!

ChrisC 16 Sep 2008 22:40

Over in Kent......

Hi

I and several others are over in Kent - I wouold be willing to meet up for a evening, day, weekend, etc?? Anyone got any ideas when or where?

Know of a couple of others in that area who might come along

ChrisC

Iain 17 Sep 2008 08:23

I was just going to suggest just meeting in a quietish pub, with some bike parking near by, perhaps on a Thursday or Friday in October, although I'm happy to go with the flow.

How are people fixed on Thursday 16th or Friday 17th October to meet up in a Brighton\Hove pub at around 7:30ish?

The idea was simply to get a few local people from horizons together for a beer, talking trips, bikes & the great unknown.

Danward79, have you got a local you'd recommend? If not I'm happy to suggest somewhere.

Iain.

danward79 17 Sep 2008 17:05

Hi Iain,

It is probably best if you suggest somewhere. I am not to familiar with the local watering holes...

Dan

Iain 18 Sep 2008 13:15

I have a couple of places in mind, but will just need to check out the parking, as the town centre is can be a bit nightmare.

Does anyone have any preferences on which day to meet up, especially Tim Cullis & ChrisC who've to travel a little further?

Iain.

ChrisC 18 Sep 2008 14:58

Parking?

Hi

If I come along I will be in my Land Cruiser, so parking for suh nearby would be handy - I presume its open to 4wd overlanders??

Chris

Iain 21 Sep 2008 13:33

In the town centre you have to pay to park cars, bikes are a little easier.

I could recommend a pub where there is free parking, but that would be on the outskirts of town.

Would people prefer the centre or are they not fussed?

The Hanover is a great pub, with parking close by, which is free at night on Queen Park Road, but it might be a bit of a trek from Hove.

Map and directions to The Hanover, BN2 9ZB - TrustedPlaces

Let me know what you think and if Thursday 16th October sounds good.

All welcome.

Iain.

jquinton 21 Sep 2008 16:03

Mind if another one turns up from Kent, Depends on final date arranged though.

wildbeeste 21 Sep 2008 19:46

Had been rebuilding a bike wreck and a friendly passerby told me about the meeting.
May I come as well?

BTW
The trusted map thingy was rubbish as regards my postcode location and the "Hanover" location is one street further North on googlemaps. I do not know which is correct though.

Iain 8 Oct 2008 09:42

By the way, there is now a Brighton community page for any one local or passing through, so if anyone has any ideas of info that might be useful, cheap eats and the like:

Linzi 8 Oct 2008 10:12

I'll be there too. Just checked out the Hanover and it's very suitable. Look forward to meeting you all. Linzi.

Wildman 13 Oct 2008 11:15

Going to try to get there. If I can, will be coming down from London.

Belle 13 Oct 2008 21:46

Apologies as I'm sure this isn't how I'm meant to reply but I can't reply to the pm from Bert333 re the kind offer of a lift, not get thru on the phone. I'll get there under my own steam as I'm not sure where I'll be starting off from - thanks though and see you all there!

Hi, knock three soft followed by one hard and we'll let you in. No need to carry the map for recognition. Linzi.

Birdy 14 Oct 2008 07:55

Because I am so awesome, I went to this meet last Thursday.

There weren't too many overlanders there so I got drunk and frollicked with freshers instead, then slept on the beach.

The Hanover is a great pub, with excellent staff, who were more than happy to look after my kit for the night.

I will post a full review of the 1st Brighton Mini Meet ASAP.

Nice euphemism!

Hi, always remember to doss down above the high water mark unless you really want a water bed experience that moves you! Linzi.

tootall 15 Oct 2008 15:54

Brighton meet

Brand new on here and just noticed the 'Hanover' get together . Great timeing ! ! !
Sorry in advance for the stupid questions.
See you there.

Iain 15 Oct 2008 16:20

By the way, the Hanover has a pool table, so I imagine a couple of games of doubles could well be in order. I have a theory that after one & three quarter pints of Guinness I have this window of opportunity that lasts until the end of the glass, where I can pot anything, then its back to potting the white. They also have a seriously old school arcade game in there called "Defender".

They do food in the pub until 9:30pm, plus there is a chip shop almost opposite.

Welcome to The Hanover Pub

Looking forward to it.

Iain.

Toyark 15 Oct 2008 16:37

"Stupid" questions are always welcome:funmeteryes: as you then are the one who has to buy all the drinks !! :innocent:

No, I'm in Morocco. But hope it goes well.

Mattrex 16 Oct 2008 11:51

Well it looks like 'tootall' will have a monoploy on daft questions! I am also new on here and was planning to come to this meet, but hurt my shoulder at work yesterday and so not able to ride at the mo. No where near :wheelchair: but hurts none the less. And it's my drinking arm at that!
Enjoy it everyone and hopefully there will be another one soon
Matt

Wildman 16 Oct 2008 12:17

Looks like I'm out too; my daughter's in town and haven't seen her for ages. Hope your shoulder gets better soon Matt.

Have a good one everyone! Catch you next time.

Iain 16 Oct 2008 12:18

Don't worry Mattrex, I'm sure we'll all end up getting together again after Christmas or in the spring, hopfully it will become a regular thing every few months. Feel free to ask away though if you've any questions, as everyone on this hub us more than happy to help.

Iain.

Bundubasher 16 Oct 2008 14:41

Got my 24hr pass so I'm still in.

Linzi 16 Oct 2008 16:27

Sorry

Hi Mattrex, I wish I could give you a lift but only have a bike which is no use. Linzi.

leevtr 16 Oct 2008 16:59

Bugger!!

I so wish i could get there.Tomorrow night and i would have made it!!
oh well, next time maybe.:(

Iain 17 Oct 2008 12:52

Thanks everyone for making the effort to come along last night, good to hear some tales of the road, my favourite the tale of a biker on the road trying to pick up the BBC World Service a good few years back and as the signal is breaking up he can vaguely make out the repeated word "nuclear", mixed with "disaster", far from home the chilling reality seems to be clear, there's been a nuclear holocaust in Europe somewhere, the bombs finally been dropped, quite a revelation to contemplate. It turns out he'd been listen to reports of the Chernobyl melt down, obviously a horrific disaster in it own right, but I could help thinking how chilling it must have felt to think a nuclear war was playing out back home.

In the new year or spring we'll have to organise another get together and perhaps a ride out on some dirt track for any one who fancies some mud.

Iain.

Belle 17 Oct 2008 13:07

Nice to meet everybody last night - great to be amongst 'like minds' as opposed to people who think you're barking. Or maybe I am but I don't care anyway. Lost my visor whilst hacking back up the M23 so it was a bit of an eyestreaming end to the evening, but we must do it again! Cheers all

Belle

Bundubasher 17 Oct 2008 14:08

Thanks to all who showed up - it was good to put faces to names at last. In a few years I might be able to organise a meet in Zimbabwe (God and Bob willing)!

Go well

Linzi 17 Oct 2008 14:51

Truth

Hi guys, nice to give the happy story but I feel the need to let the cat out of the bag and tell what really happened-after all it's probably history now.
There we were in the Hanover. Two on the pool table, the rest in a group behind it, glasses in hands just beginning to converse. I hardly noticed the "ring ting ting" of a group of scooters stopping outside. I certainly didn't relate it to Quadrophenia and the Brighton of the 60's. The door was flung in and in rushed the green clad Mods. They knew bikers were there by the line up of bikes outside. they turned to us immediately and rushed the pool table aggresively. Quick as a flash Iain, our host, downed the first and biggest one! Good shot! Nice follow through! I had hardly taken it in but all together, as if trained, the HUBB group split left and right around the pool table and closed the pincer move, cutting the Mods off from any retreat. The three bar staff leapt the bar and opened the door offering support and leaving the Mods in no doubt they're not welcome. It is all credit to travellers that the Mods were removed from the pub without further violence and I doubt they'll be back. Well done Iain. Fine performance-in organizing the meet I mean. The beer was great as usual but sorry I can't remember any more of the night. Woke up this morning with a wry smile and the sun was shining again. Boy life's good! Sorry just felt the actual events were nothing to be ashamed of. Linzi, Hic.

ChrisC 17 Oct 2008 18:09

Well done

Well done to all who turned up - not a bad turn out for a mid-week night.
Thanks to Iain for instigating the meet and we must do it again, may before Xmas or after new year.

See you all again soon and happy travels

Mattrex 17 Oct 2008 20:09

Glad everyone had a good evening. Thanks for your offer linzi but it would have been painful! Feeling much better now so will definately be up for the next one. A friday would be even better as I have relatives in Brighton and could sleep there then :eek3:. Take care all
Matt

Linzi 17 Oct 2008 20:52

Friday

Hear that Iain? A request for Friday. A worthy one to accomodate. They have a big private room too I was told but we might have to grease the staff a bit to avoid a charge. Linzi.

wildbeeste 17 Oct 2008 23:07

Enjoyed the evening.(Rather too much..)
Iain, Next time could we stop playing pool when we are ahead?
BTW I missed the fight probably happened when I was In the loo. :innocent:

Looking foward to the rematch.

Iain 18 Oct 2008 09:15

December would be good, but it all goes a bit mad, so how about Friday 9th Jan for the next Brighton meet, back at the Hanover. I'll put a proper posting up late November.

Iain.

Linzi 18 Oct 2008 12:28

Next Meet

Yep, assuming I get to Morocco I should be back and could bring along some photos or whatever one gets in Morocco. Don't know what yet! I'm left wondering if a mobile phone ring ting ting tone caused a flash back or was I in a parallel universe at the meeting? Was, am, it's all so confusing these days. Global warming, financial melt down- related? How come I risk hypothermia in Morocco now rather than heat stroke? It's meant to be HOT. My doctor said so and he's from Sudan! Linzi.
