HU Weekend Scotland - The 'Travelling Meet!'

ok, ok...

so, let's poll some dates

19/20 Sep
25/27 Sep
10/11 Oct

I'll be looking at doing something up through the Cairgorms. With a definite leaving point from Castle St in Edinburgh.

cheers,
Doug

Laura Bennitt 7 Aug 2009 21:49

If it's anything other than the first option I'll be away again!

Jake 7 Aug 2009 23:00

19/20 sept is good, but Octobers no good to me will be out of the country - Probably !

XRM 8 Aug 2009 18:00

Any of those dates OK for me ......

JimOD 16 Aug 2009 11:47

19th/20th September would be my chosen date.

Canny Lad 16 Aug 2009 20:51

Hi , 19/20 th sep would be gr8 for me . cheers clive.

Jake 17 Aug 2009 14:28

It seems I have misled you or more the case my missus has misled me - so going by her new instructions - which as we all know my missus being a lady might well change and probably will - but it looks like 19/20 may no longer be available to me as we may well be away during mid September -may not your guess is as good as mine - but as that may well (probably will) change again then I can only say if I happen to be around when you decide to go then i will come along but i may well be somewhere else. Now then that's as definite as I can currently be.

MikeS 17 Aug 2009 16:46

'Friad the 12th and 19th Sept are both out for me but think the other later dates could work.

greenmanalishi 24 Aug 2009 16:20

October would be great for me. I would be coming from Wirral so I would arrive the night before and stay at My brothers in Joppa. looking forward to hearing the final decision on the dates

DougieB 28 Aug 2009 00:04

hey, been away a bit...

so, a few of us in the pub tonight come up with the weekend of the 19th Sep. We're thinking somewhere around 2-3 hours max, north of Edinburgh. A campsite with a bar attached or very near.

shout if you're in. I'll have a think about a location, but I'm initially thinking of Glen Clova. Which has camping, bunkhouse and a bar..

cheers,
Doug

PS. I think some were talking about October as well ?

DougieB 10 Sep 2009 18:51

we have a plan..

"Another option could be Oban for the first night and wild camp somewhere, ferry to Mull (0730, 0930, 1145, 1400, takes 45 mins), pootle on Mull, ferry to Ardnamurchan (last ones 1600 & 1800, 35 mins, none on Sunday), where there is this place which apparently has a hotel & bar within a mile Study Centre for 2nd night, then back on Sunday? Anyone who only wants to do a night, or needs to be back earlier on Sunday, could join us on Mull then head back to Oban from there?"

cheers,
Doug

Plans

So, who's coming along?

And if we suggest meeting 4.30 for a 5pm departure, is that going to work for everyone? We could add in a stop at Stirling services to pick up anyone that's useful for, and go for the Tyndrum chippy.

There's a wild camping spot next to the hotel at Bridge of Orchy (though the only time I've been there it was quite soggy - anyone been recently to know what it's like after this summer of rain?).

Also enquiring about wild camping options nearer Oban - what would people prefer, and does anyone have any suggestions nearer there?

Laura

Campsites!?!

Hi there,

Further to conversations with Laura and Dougie late this afternoon here is a suggestion of a camping site in the area... It says they also have cabins for people who want more luxury! I have not used this site but have a look at there website and let us know what you think!?! Dougie... is this the one you where thinking of?

Menu

Dougie and I where thinking that camping in one place for 2 nights would be a good plan giving us showers and freedom to do whatever you want on the Saturday without worrying about getting to/finding the next camping place and catching up with everyone again!

Let us know your thoughts... not long to go now!

Hi , sorry im out of this one as ive just got home from Belfast with work, if I dont spend at least some time in my house im gonna get squaters!

I was in Oban on my bike sat b4 last , I stopped in Oban Backpackers , you can find it on Hostelbookers website. The owner peter has a gs and is real biker friendly, check it out if the weathers naff. Bike parking outside the hostel, if you go there tell him Clive says hi.

Laura I have camped at Bridge of Orchy many many times, its high ground so it should be ok, dont 4get mind the bunkhouse at the back of the hotel. You can also find gr8 camping and bunkhouse in Tyndrum behind the chippy , its called "By the Way Hostel". Or you can camp at Beininglass farm at Invorannan and spend a night in the Drovers pub. I know the place like the back of my hand as its on the West Highland Way and ive done it so many times ive lost count . He he , if you want any more info just mail me .

I hope you all have a gr8 time and I will see you at Dazzaz shindig in November.

Ride safe

Final Details For This Weekend!

Hi All,

OK! This is the FINAL plan!

£6 per person. Showers included. Campsite shop. No lights in the site so remember a torch.
Check out Google for directions from where your coming from. On the A82 at the top of Loch Lomond, if you find the Drover's Inn on the A85 (big white building, you can't miss it) then the campsite is about 200 yards up the road towards Crianlarich.

Shopping - According to Doug the closest 'real' shop will be Crianlarich (if open) or Tyndrum.
Local Pub - Drover's Inn Drovers and Drovers Lodge Traditional Scottish Inn Loch Lomond

Island Hoping - For those that fancy a bit of Island hoping, Oban is an hour away giving easy access to Mull for a days exploring! Once on Mull riding from Craignure to Fionnphort will take you an hour each way or from Craignure to Tobermory 40mins each way.
OR
You could do a circle... Craignure to Tobermory (40mins), onto Ensay (30mins), onto Gruline (40mins), onto Fionnphort (1 hour) and back to Craignure (again 1 hour). You should beable to do this tour within 4 hours in total excluding stops.

Ferry's leave Oban at 7:30am (arrive 8:16am), or 9:30am (arrive 10:16am), going to Craignure with the last ferry's returning from this same point at 3pm and 5pm costing £27 per bike. Have a look at the link below to calmac for check in times etc!

Inveraray - Another possible day trip... 1 hour each way. This town has a castle and jail amoungst other attractions...
Have a look at this website to find out more! 10 Great Reasons to Visit Inveraray and Visit Argyll

There's loads of other things to do in this area... nice walks and roads all around!

Getting there - If people let me know when and where you are leaving from we can try to meet up along the way!

Doug - 6am on his green steed! When do you think you will arrive?
Beej & Chris - Lunchtime... ish... exact time to be decided from Edinburgh!

Looking forward to it!
