Horizons Unlimited Meeting Original September 8-10 2023

It’s back! Same site! Different weekend! Same formula!

Location:
The Miners Standard
Bank Top
Winster
Matlock
Derbyshire
DE4 2DR
8-10 September 2023

There’s no entrance fee... that’s the good bit… but there’s also nothing organised!

This is a small friendly meeting designed to meet folks and get talking! Everyone is welcome be it caravan/RV or tent. There is no function room but we can use the restaurant outside meal times. I have provisionally made a dinner booking for all of us on Saturday night at 7.00pm.

Winster is an old mining village and worth a walk around, and of course it’s set in the wonderful Peak District. There’s shops and pubs in walking distance.

The pub is open all day. Good food available. Camping is behind the pub. It’s £7.00 per person payable at the bar on arrival. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a motor home or tent all are welcome and it’s still £7.00 per person. There is no electric available in the campsite. Showers and toilets are open 24 hours. There is a £1.00 charge for the showers.

Dietary requirements and camping facility (there aren’t many) questions should be made directly to the pub. Best to phone them and not rely on them emailing you...
Anything else you can PM me
Please let me know if you’re planning on dining in the restaurant Saturday night.

Real ale available at the bar... there’s not much of a phone signal anywhere and none at all in the pub… and the pub doesn’t have Wi-Fi

Oh yeh and this is the village in Derbyshire and not the one somewhere in Cumbria…

I (Glynn) shall be there from the Friday till Sunday morning rain or shine. I expect most to show up during Saturday either for the day or night and hopefully dinner!

Please help spread the word…..

Hope you can come!

I hope to be there broken ribs permitting and it looks like the weather should have perked up by then as well.

Bicycle, I was hit from behind by a car driver who thought they could squeeze between me and an oncoming tractor and misjudged it by a mirrors width.
The driver has reported it to their insurance who have agreed to pay for the damage to the bike and we will see later about personal injury, I do not know yet if plod are going to throw the book at her for due care and attention but with the highway code revisions last year it has to be a possibility.

Sorry to hear that Mark. I hope your ribs recover soon but when I did mine last year (tripped on tree roots in a running race) it was 8-9 months before the last vestiges went. I was back on my feet in a couple of weeks but they hurt on exercise for quite some time. I think if you venture onto the roads in any pedestrian form - cycling obviously but running / walking also, it's just a matter of time. Hardly a day goes by for me without without somebody 'misjudging' the space they give me when overtaking.

Actually I don't think they genuinely misjudge it very often. Maybe your lady did but usually either they don't care or there's some kind of 'teach you a lesson' aggression going on. The last two times (both this week) for that sort of thing for me were one by a bicycle when I was running on a quiet road in the Cotswolds. The road was empty but he still came by close enough to brush my shoulder. The second was on my vintage Yamaha where a bloke came past on an empty dual carriageway still in my lane. That was a BMW, but not a car - a loaded up GS. That was another miss by an inch. That's two in a week but it's every week.

I guess the police will come to some decision in your case but I'd have thought a claim for personal injury would be straightforward (or as straightforward as these things ever are) if she's prosecuted.

That is a heck of a trip for a nights camping. Fair play to you.

I think we might come in on Friday night to camp and explore some of the Peaks district on Saturday.

Update!

The weather is looking grrreat!

I’m still waiting for a few of you to email me your choice of meal for the Saturday night. PM me if you prefer.

I shall be there from Friday lunchtime, but you can turn up anytime, it’s a campsite most of the year round.

If you’re still thinking about coming but think you won't know anyone, don’t worry! Most of the folk showing up are solo, we’re a friendly bunch!

Folk from USA, Devon and Long Eaton….

Hope you can come!

Raffle

We’d like to hold a raffle again to raise some funds for the website/charity.
We have nothing and I know how difficult it is to find prizes.

It would be great if you could look behind the telly and bring along some bike related DVD’s you no longer need to be raffled off. :D

Or anything else??? bier

Thankyou soooo much!

See you soon!

Glynn

Hi, sorry to have missed you and so hope you get well soon.

As I am down the road just 15 miles and I am away on Tuesday to go the the HU France meeting I just went up in the evening for a chat and a meal. It was good to be able to put together some faces and names. There was good conversation and when I was walking off at the end of the evening I was talking to Liam- the youngest person there by some years - and we both felt that there was not too much to be feared about going on the road and travelling.

A big thank you to Glynn for organising us and for initiating the event. Thank you.
