3rd Northern Mini Meet!

New meeting - New thread....

Seems to me there is some resesistance to Applrecross on grounds of distance and it being in a different country??? It's a fair cop! Perhabs we have to ask the Scottish contingent to organise that and just invite ourselves when it's ready...

How about Lakes in March? Keeps us moving the area and stay on 6 months schedule...Or is anybody interested in a Winter Meeting?

Just keep the ideas coming...

Joe C90 30 Oct 2006 17:44

winter meet

Sounds like a damn fine plan.
Once again can I heartily reccommend Dent (Cumbria), it is a few klicks north of the ribblehead viaduct. there are several trails to play on for the adventurous. There is good food and beer in the pubs in town (500m from campsite). (one of the landladies does a fair Ms Basil Fawlty).
The campsite does a fine Breakfast.

the whole area is well worth visiting.

:thumbup1:

I vote for mid Jan (am away latejan/early feb).
:scooter:

Jake 30 Oct 2006 18:41

I love winter camping so I will try to be there, already off to one in Herefordshire -cos its loads warmer down south ! -Applecross would have been fun, However i am willing to give most places a go just let me know where and when. Jake.

Joe you will be in a snow hole up in the Arctic will you not ??

Joe C90 30 Oct 2006 21:32

snow joke

if i crash into a snow drift may well be!

Tenting for me old chap!

Fritz 31 Oct 2006 13:58

May well be interested...and thanks to all for the last one...'twas great. Never got round to posting a thanks. Chau, Fritz ;-)

V2RJO 31 Oct 2006 21:52

I'm up for January...

Will watch the thread with interest.

JAKE......what's the Hereford meeting/camp?

Roger.

Jake 31 Oct 2006 22:16

I go to a Laverda meeting down there every winter - been a Laverda owner - rider for 20 years, now sold the Jarama - jota and montjuic cos some bad spine injurys have knacked me from riding them. Now only have my Big trailee with its soft suspension and straight back riding position - great for knackered backs and worn out bodys. but still love those Old Orange Italians - so keep in touch with the club and go to a few dos here and there.
It was good to meet you at allenheads hope to see you around somewhere - Jake.

Debz 3 Nov 2006 07:54

Hi there

Excellent idea! We'll be up for a Winter meet. Any weekend good for us in January.

Very sad news

Hi Chaps
Time for a quick introduction. I'm Kate who travelled with Jens (or Atwoke) in South America between May and July 2006.
Unfortunately I'm writing with sad news. Jans was involved in a serious accident at work on Thursday 2nd November and died later that day. HSE are investigating.
I'm trying to contact as many people as possible. Jens loved being involved with Horizons and enjoyed spending time with everyone he met through the site.
If anyone would like to send a message to his family please feel free to contact me so I can pass any messages on.
Thanks
Kate

Jake 8 Nov 2006 21:29

Katee, this is devastating news -sorry you have had to bring it to us - I have forwarded you a private message. Jens will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him. Brad.(Jake)

Fritz 9 Nov 2006 14:04

****... stunned. Such sad, sad news. RIP Jens. FritzyBev

chris 9 Nov 2006 15:53

What really sad news. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

RIP Jens.

Am truly gutted, only met the guy for the 1st time at the mini meet.
my Condolences to all who were close to him.

Jens' Memorial Service

Thank you so much for all your messages. Jens would be so pleased that so many people thought so well of him. I will collate all the messages and pass them on to Jens family.
A memorial service has been arranged for anyone who wishes to attend. It is to be held at the Parish Church in Bellingham, Northumberland at 1.00pm on Thursday 16th November. If anyone is able to attend it would be good to see you however I realise it could be a long journey for most.
We are waiting from word from his family about flowers or donations and I will post another message a soon as I hear anything.
Thank you once again and I will pass on all your messages to Jens family
Best wishes
Kate

BDG 10 Nov 2006 16:55

Thats horrendous news, i'm so sorry to hear, please pass on my condolences as well.

James Surtees 10 Nov 2006 17:47

Terrible news kate only met Jens once at the Blakey Ridge meet and my father met him again at the allenheads meet. A big personality who will be sadly missed. Hoping to make the memorial service.

Please pass on our sincerest condolences to the family..

shandydrinker 10 Nov 2006 19:09

Dreadful news, very sorry to hear it. Gutted.

Suebacon 11 Nov 2006 09:32

Jens

Katee,
There really isn't much else that I can add to the previous postings, except to say that I too, only met Jens at the last mini meet at Allenheads but was impressed with his jovial spirit and sense of adventure. Without him organising the w/e we wouldn't have had such a good time.
Its impossible to put into words how he will be missed, even by those who only met him briefly but it is true.
Please convey my condolences to his family and friends.

Sue

Joe C90 11 Nov 2006 12:42

mini meet

Can I suggest we carry on with the idea of a winter mini-meet in Jens' name, I'm sure there are people who who like to talk about him and celebrate the life of a good man and fellow biker/traveller. Any comments?
I will try to attend the memorial service

Glynn Roberts 12 Nov 2006 21:28

Very sad news indeed. Katee please pass on my condolonces to family and friends

katee 13 Nov 2006 09:28

Thank you again. It would be good to see some of you at the memorial service if you can make it.
I think Jens would be delighted if the meeting went ahead anyways and I would hope to come along as well if possible. I'd love to meet all of you.
Thanks again
Kate

Jake 17 Nov 2006 22:32

On the 16 November A Number of HU members showed up on behalf of the HU community to pay last respects and say goodbye to Jens on his final journey, He will be missed by all who knew him I am sure.
Having spoken to a number of members I will try to organise the winter mini meet that Jens had started to put together.
The propsed dates were the 3rd weekend of January and the Location being Dent in Cumbria. This will be a social meeting, camping, food and beer very cold nights and probably a limited off road ride out for the silly ones and possibly a road ride out with a warm cafe for the not quite so silly ones.
If there is any interest can you let me know so I can get some idea of possible numbers attending to enable me to approach suitable venues. Cheers Jake.

mustaphapint 17 Nov 2006 23:01

I didn't meet Jens, but it is very sad news. My condolences to his family and friends. I would be interested in the winter weekend at Dent.

Brian E 17 Nov 2006 23:29

I would like to attend that weekend.

Joe C90 18 Nov 2006 00:15

mini meet

I have made the suggestion of a meet in Dent, weekend jan 20/21 2007.

There are lanes in the area, but checking will have to be done as to the TRO restrictions. If Brian is available to help on this front, I believe some serious quantities of beer should be booked for him. He did sterling work on the last meet.

I am off on my travels on the 23 jan so please don't let me participate in the greenlaning....... If i bust the 90 I will be most unhappy!

The campsite is totally bike friendly and make damn fine breakfasts. The FLW bike club in hudds and MZ owners use this site annually, without any problems. the bogs are basic, but for hardy travellers this shouldn't be a problem. there is plenty of reading material for whilst sat down......

A few links to whet the appetite.

http://www.dentdale.com/conderfarm.htm
http://www.visitcumbria.com/sl/dent.htm
http://www.greatbeer.co.uk/cumsuin.htm

last but certainly not least, Jens' memorial service was a fitting tribute to a man of large stature and spirit. People from the the various parts of his life attended, including Katee and 8 or so of our biking comunity. the church was packed, very little standing room left. He will be missed by many.

Debz 18 Nov 2006 09:09

Hiya

Count us in for mini meet in January (brrrrr!).

Iain & Debz

Brian E 18 Nov 2006 21:27

Not sure yet if i will be available i do run businesses and the Coast 2 Coast run's are proving very popular in cars and bikes. i will know in the new year.

Thanks

Hi everyone
Thanks again to everyone who managed to come to Jens funeral. It was great to see people there and Hennis, Jens' brother was very grateful for all your thoughts and best wishes.
It sounds like I'm not allowed to back out of the meeting in January so I guess I'll be there! If anyone is heading over from the Newcastle area I'd be grateful of a companion - Jens normally picks my bike up for me when I drop it!
Thanks again and see you in January
Kate

Fritz 20 Nov 2006 13:45

2 more for Dent

Hopefully Bev and I are in for this. Very pleased to hear the memorial service was well attended, our thoughts were with you even if we couldn't be.

Jake 22 Nov 2006 16:39

Just to let everyone know I have contacted Dent camping site to enquire about a camping weekend on the 19/20 January, If they are open for camping and able to take us I will set this as the date and will then make enquiries with the three pubs to find the most suitable for food - beer and the ability to accommodate us into hopefully one (Child and pool table free) room for the evening.
I will even have to take on the terrible task of riding over to Dent and visiting said establishments and sample the food, beer and suitabilty. Whilst my wife will have the pleasure all to herself of going to Newcastle to do the christmas shopping.
You see what I am willing to give up - only I assure you - to ensure you lot all have nice convivial surroundings that live upto your high standards and expectations on your winter journeys to the North!.

BDG 22 Nov 2006 16:47

I won't be there as its my sons 5th birthday, so it'll be party time with 20 kids.

I hope it stays snow free for you all and have a great time.

Joe C90 22 Nov 2006 17:44

sun inn

Have been to dent on bike do's several times. the Sun Inn has always provided well well good food and beer, i put a link on previously.

Jake 22 Nov 2006 21:09

joec90 Yep I saw your link and can't do better than a recommend from you - but me thinks I will still do the honourable thing and pre test the area and pubs if I get the chance to escape for a night.

Jake 28 Nov 2006 23:38

The campsite at Dent is closed for the winter however they are opening for us however there is a strict maximum of thirty allowed to attend for camping. Fees will be £4.00 a head and Mick the owner is prepared to do breakfasts for a small fee. The campsite is 100 yds from the village and so the pubs are well within range. I will check on numbers attending to keep within the limit but cant see more than 20 coming !!!!

Joe C90 29 Nov 2006 01:32

They usually open for our bike club do, Famous Last Words, Huddersfield and the mz owners club meet there in winter. they are very accomadating and the breakfast is good.

Jake 6 Dec 2006 22:23

I am going to be in Dent sometime over this weekend to check out the beer and food situation, I know its early yet but was wondering if there is any more provisional interest in this meeting - so far i think we have about five going!!!. Any feedback would be helpful cheers - Jake

dent

I was there at the famous last words club do last weekend, the sun inn's Dent aviator was superb. I did eat Jacket tatty with tuna and salad enjoyed it etc.

The condor campsite was fine as ever, bonus being the pegs go in nice and easy. I didn't try the campsite breakfast as i surfaced too late.

what more can I say???

Fritz 7 Dec 2006 13:22

Still hoping to make it, both of us, maybe even on two bikes!

Hi
Pleased to hear that you are going to make it Brian, can we do something along the lines of the ride that we did on the Sunday at the Allenheads meet?
And how about bringing your 640 Adv along to show me how to ride mine

Very sorry to hear about Jens - been up to my ears in domestic stuff, just checked in to see if anything's cooking only to read the bad news. What a sound chap, didn't know him apart from mini-meets but he came across as one good guy...............
There's a wedding on in Derbyshire on mini-meet weekend so I guess I'll miss out on seeing you in Dent - have a good time, forecast is for an ace early spring!

chris 3 Jan 2007 14:13

Accom in Dent?

Hi peoples

Anyone ever stayed in a B&B in Dent that they would recommend?

Depending on the weather I'll either be in the van (sleep in the back etc) or on the scabby Trannie (but my small tent is in Spain... long story), so if the later comes to pass, I'd like the luxury of a B&B.

See you there,
Chris

Jake 7 Jan 2007 20:22

Chris first things first the pub we are using for food (sun inn 01539625208) does b&b, however if your stuck you can squeeze in my tent, there may be a mate as well but its well big enough for three - as I will be bringing the Tipi.

I have spoken to the publican and she will get in enough supplies to feed us but states they have a lot of regulars on a friday and saturday so asks if we are eating then it would be easier if we ate as a group at 7 pm each night, food is only served till 8-30 as then it reverts to its prime purpose a beer house.

I will be getting to dent about 3 to 3.30 get tent up and sorted I will have tea/ coffee on the go and may even have hot soup and a roll on the go to warm you up on arrivals so see you there.
If anyone wants to meet up for the ride down I will be Leaving Warkworth about 1 ish and passing Newcastle about 1.30.

finally if anyone will be wanting breakfasts off the campsite let me know here so i can pre order rough numbers as the site is closed and the owner needs to get supplies in cheers.

mustaphapint 9 Jan 2007 00:44

I am planning arriving mid-afternoon Saturday, so please put me down for evening meal Saturday evening in the pub and breakfast on site sunday morning. MOH is still recovering from a broken collar bone so if she comes she will probably be in the car and may or may not be camping.

Debz 9 Jan 2007 08:31

Hello Brian,

Hope to arrive on Friday with Fritz and Bev, so could you put me down for evening meals Friday and Saturday, and breakfast Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks Alec.

chris 14 Jan 2007 18:19

Hi Jake
As it's not feasible to skip work early on Friday, I'm aiming to arrive by noon on Saturday, so please put me down for Sat evening and Sunday morning food.

I'll leave it to the last minute to decide if I'm in the van or on the bike, but if it's the later, I'd like to take you up on your kind offer of somewhere in your tent to unroll my sleeping bag.

See you all at the weekend.

Now I'm confused! There are 2 other campsites on the map. All 3 within walking distance of the village. Why have you assumed it's that one? I was just going to look for other tents/bikes when I get there.

Jake 18 Jan 2007 12:52

Directions around DENT for those that may get lost, If your coming from the M6 into Dent pass the first campsite then look for the George and Dragon pub then nearby on the right is the Post office turn Right and the campsite is 100 yds or so from there. see you there Jake.

Jake 21 Jan 2007 19:17

To all those that turned up to this meet Thanks, Especially Alec who attended on behalf of all you southerners having travelled the furthest and camped both nights I am sure he gets the Gold star. But it was great to see everyone and meet one or two new people, The weather gods were against us and the wind ,rain and sleet made the weekend pretty uncomfortable along with the muddy slopes of the campsite. The Odious Landlady at the pub did her best to keep us miserable when we escaped the weather and kept those that chose B&B at her pub maybe wishing they had faced up to weather outside instead of her miserable, cold and unfriendly hosting manner. In fact I think we believed the village were up against us - this was even more highlighted when chris alighted from his B&B above the village store and joined us for breakfast at the campsite stating that he may as well have camped as he had no heating, a cold shower and the landlady prefered not to cook breakfast. Even a number of the villagers sneared as they passed us on sunday morning -( Mick and his wife at the campsite did there very best to make us most welcome and the lady in the post office was fine too).
But I am sure if Jens was looking down he would certainly have had a smile at our discomfort. We all had a drink or two in his memory.
I am sure I can leave it upto individuals to post there own slant on this weekend, but all in all it was one to remember.

mustaphapint 21 Jan 2007 20:55

Nice to meet you all. Even though I only managed the Saturday night I experienced sunshine, hail, ice covered roads, torrential rain, howling gales and heavy snow between leaving home and getting back. A great weekend, I missed out on the "hospitality" in the pub on Friday night but I've got no complaints about the food and the company on Saturday evening and the breakfast on the campsite on Sunday morning.
Paul

chris 21 Jan 2007 21:13

Had a great weekend. Thanks to all for being superb company. ANd Jake for being our Leader.

The locals of Dent (Dentees? Dentures?) are definitely odd. Inbreeding? Who cares. The ride there and back was fun and the scenery interesting.

Let's meet again sooner than later for the 4th Northern HU Meet:

Before Easter I'm free 17/18March and 24/25March.

After Easter I'm free 28/29April, 5/6 May (7th is Bank Hol Monday) and 12/13May.

Maybe at Blakey Ridge again? The publican there seemed to know how to make people feel welcome.

Cheers
Chris

Debz 22 Jan 2007 06:28

Hi guys

Another great weekend in great company! We didn't let the weather dampen our spirits or flatten our tents however hard it tried (and it tried very hard at times, especially around 4am Saturday morning!).

Jake, thanks for being our leader (although none of us needed much leading to the shelter of the pub).

Hopefully, will see you all at the next one.

Thanks to everyone, great weekend, and I too am sure there was a smiling face looking down on us all in our hour(s) of need.
The leader’s tent was god sent and created the community spirit missing in much of Dent. (Campsite staff excepted) The beer it has to be said in the pub was excellent, and luckily available to those not of a ‘local’ dispensation, and so greatly enjoyed by the in-comers.
All in all it was a great w/e and even the trip to A&E on the way home for Mr Balloon-face couldn’t detract from how good it was to meet up again. Hopefully see you all at Blakey….only camped once there when the winds breached 80mph :-0

Picture shows one advantage of the w/e’s weather – thanks to Ian for the kite-flying lessons!

If you are using windows XP and outlook express, the easiest way is to email it to yourself by rightclicking and choosing send. You should then be given an option to reduce the size for emailing. You can then save the picture from your email program as a smaller version of the original.
Otherwise open up the picture in paint and choose shrink. Trouble is you then have to know or experiment what % to shrink it to make it a reasonable size.
Look forward to the piccies.
