HU 13th North Carolina meeting Oct 6-9 2016

It's back! Perfect time of year - lovely temps and fall colors! Southern hospitality provided by uber-host Mike Kilpatrick, assisted by Steve Anderson, John and Charlene and the team at Ironhorse Motorcycle Lodge. Great riding in the Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway and Blue Ridge Parkway.

Typical comment: "Big thanks to Mike & Steve for putting together such a wonderful event! All the heart & soul you put into it gave us a platform to chillax & connect in so many ways. Thanks for setting the tone & keeping the ball rolling."

Online registration is open now!

Have just registered for the HU North Carolina October meeting. Stayed at Iron Horse on July 20, 21, & 22. Fabulous venue and great food. Reserved my campsite before I left. Looking forward to going back, learning from the presenters, volunteering, and riding the great roads in N.C.

I am considering riding down to NC from MA. Will day passes be available for folks that just show up the day of the event who do not require camping but may want to attend the days activities?

In and paid. I won't be presenting this year but feel free to ask about Alaska or Mexico if you see me. I have a great "Transito" story!

Great venue and hoping to make it this year!

Is there anyone scheduled for presenters at this event yet?

Deckyon 15 Sep 2016 20:45

I am already in, but was not able to get a bunk reserved for the week. If anyone has room, or looking for a few extra bucks and would let me crash out on their floor, that would be great. I am bringing my tent, and have a bunk for Wednesday night, but would rather have a real roof.

Anyone up for a ride on Friday?

I was thinking about taking heading taking the Tail of the Dragon/Cherohala loop with some dirt/gravel. I'll get on the Tail of the Dragon first before it gets too busy (Stop at the store first). Loop down to Telico Plains via 360 and get lunch. Then jump on the Cherohala Skyway. Instead of all of the Cherohala, we can hit some dirt/gravel by heading down River Road (FR210 Paved) to Upper River Road (FR217) and then Wagon Train/Stewart Cabin Road (FR81) back to the Cherohala and then back to Iron Horse.

I'll be on a Super Tenere, so I won't be doing anything crazy.

No word back from Deckyon. I have a semi-private cabin Thurs/Fri/Sat nites, two twins, with a riding partner who is not coming. Looking to have a roommate to split costs. $130 for the three nights. Best contact is cell 239-910-3913 text or call.

Running from Matthew

With Hurricane Matthew baring down on Charleston, I'm glad I'm heading to the mountains this weekend! See you all there!!! :-)

that was great, thanks to all participants and attendees for a great inspiring weekend.

It was awesome to see everyone and to meet some new people!

Sue, the girls, and I left Milwaukee Tuesday Morning, with the plan to arrive Wednesday night. We would then ride around some Thursday before settling in for the sessions over the weekend. We don't like to miss the classes to ride the roads, since the roads are there all the time and the classes aren't.

Since it was the four of us and the girl's daily range is only about 150 we 'cheated' and brought Cliff the RV. We would be giving a class on our summer trip with him too, so it kind of made sense for him to come along.

We've also managed to get Kaylei, Sue's older daughter, excited to empty the sewer tanks. I don't know how that happened but I'm not going to complain.

It wasn't perfectly smooth sailing on the way down - we had a punctured radiator hose which causes us to stop sooner than planned on Tuesday. In whiskey country.

But we were up and moving again the next morning after a replacement hose was installed. This meant we were behind schedule and, when we then lost a belt and had to replace that we decided to spend Wednesday night in Pigeon Forge, rather than going through the smokies at night.

So, the next morning we were up and driving again, and wishing we were on the bikes.

Once we got to Iron Horse we quickly parked, unloaded, and headed for Deal's Gap. I am not, automatically, a fan of the Dragon. I think there are better roads in the area, but we wanted Dragon Slayer Stickers for the RX3s and we don't cheat on that sort of thing.

We missed the first few classes but managed to get back in time for the evening, after sitting around the fire and catching up with friends.

The classes were all the usual awesome, and I didn't take a lot of pictures (because I always forget to take a lot of pictures).

Once the weekend was over (Waaaahhh!) everyone scattered, some to the south and east to see if they still had homes. Yeah, there was a hurricane again but this time we only got a light sprinkle in the mountains. We packed up, leaving late with all the goodbyes, and then broke down again.

Cliff just doesn't like Louisville. We are 0/3 on driving through that city without something going wrong.

The delay was enough for us to get back to Milwaukee after 10, rather than around 4 (again, taking 2 days to get back), but that is just travel sometimes.

So, naturally, looking forward to the next one!

I got to within 75 miles of home before my 60 miles per quart oil leak increased to 30 miles per quart and the bike got hard to start. I was afraid it would go down to 5 miles per quart and would seize the engine. Rode home on the back of the truck . Autopsy is complete and a new piston and cylinder on order.
