When my friend JD Smith comes to give his presentation on crossing the Darien Gap with a Suzuki 100 2 stroke it will be well worth attending. See you in Nakusp.

New timers

My wife will be retiring from over 30 years as an elementary school teacher in June of 2017. We are looking at a trip up through Canada to Alaska via 4Runner and small RTT trailer. We've been camping for 40 years, but she has never been on anything this extensive. Unfortunately, her school year will be beginning the fourth week in August of this year, so she cannot come.

I do plan on attending and am looking for folks who can give me advice for the planned trip. I would also like to hear from any ladies who could give my wife some advice via email, Skype, etc., over the next year. Any volunteers?

This looks like it will be focused primarily on two wheelers (I also ride a R100GS and a DL650 hack). Will there be anything directed toward 4wheelers?

PM me and I'll send you our email addresses.

Dale

Hi WU7X

Welcome to the HUBB :)

Don't worry about being on 4 wheels, we travel on 2 or 4 wheels and the HUBB community realise that people have families, pets, ailments etc etc.

Its unfortunate your wife cannot attend, there is always a good crowd of ladies - led by Susan, to give first hand advice and knowledge from years of overland travelling and Im sure that you will meet plenty of helpful people at Nakusp to answer your questions.

With your camping experience you will both be fine, I always tell people that the hardest part of any trip is all of the preparation and putting things in order with family, property, finances etc before the trip - when you hit the road all you have to worry about is where to stop for the night, finding something to eat and drink, having fun, meeting people and looking after your mode of transport.

Grif,

Thanks so much for the positive comments. Hope to run into you up there!

Happy to help out! I'll be at the event doing an introductory educational session on getting the most value from your GPS. :) We can talk at the event, and get your wife on SKYPE for a meet and greet if she wishes!

Will there be internet available for presenters?

Anyone have suggestions for routes (preferably not all pavement) to Nakusp? Traveling from the Vancouver area and starting to put together a plan.

Thanks.

Wow. Where to start, where to start :mchappy:

There are so many off pavement options.

The way I went two years ago was:

Up the Coquihalla to the Tulameen Forestry Service Road to Tulameen and on to Princeton. The final section descending into Tulameen is a single lane road hugging the hillside along a creek. Quite beautiful. Be aware of massive logging trucks on the rest of the route during the week.

From Princeton I stayed on the highway to Penticton.

From Penticton I took Beaverdell Road and Okanagan Falls Forestry Service Road and ended up near McCullough. Then I headed south on Hwy 33 to Bearverdell. Then on to the rougher Beaverdell - Slate Creek FS Road to Christian Valley.

From Christian Valley I headed north to meet up with Hwy 6. Make sure you gas up in Penticton. It will be your last chance until Nakusp (or possibly a detour into Edgewood).

Other routes I've taken:

North from Grand Forks (last fuel) via the Burrell Creek FS Road (officially decommissioned but passable two years ago).

North from Pemberton via the Highline Road to Seton Portage (very nice).

North from Pemberton via the Hurley Pass to Gold Bridge (nice view back onto the Pemberton Valley but otherwise a bit tedious).

From Lillooet to Lytton First Nation via Texas Creek Road. I got turned around there due to washouts and the ferry to Lytton not running due to extremely high water in May. I love this road and there's a nice camping spot at the Stein Valley trailhead.

There's always the Princeton/Summerland road via Osprey Lake. It's much more paved than it used to be and the gravel sections are mostly in very good shape.

I've also done the McKinley Camp Road from Oliver to just west of Rock Creek.

On one trip I did what was probably the gnarliest one. I went from near Midway along Norwegian Creek Road (very good road) but I got lost and ended up on City of Paris Road. Well, it was not exactly "gay Paris". It's a single lane rutted downhill with two tire tracks and an overgrown centre. To make matters worse I had earlier felt something amiss and discovered that I had sheared off a bolt on my subframe. All the way down I was alternating between praying to and cursing a god I don't believe in ...hoping that there wouldn't be a locked gate up ahead (there wasn't).

Have fun.
...Michelle

Thinking about attending this event. Never been to any HU event before. Spent and hour on the website trying to find the dog policy for this event. Finally decided to register to this forum so that I could ask if anybody knows. Can somebody point me? Looking specifically for rules applying to camping at the event with dog, attending talks/presentations with dog, participating in meals with dog, and any other rules that would restrict my enjoyment of the event - with dog.

Susan Johnson 14 Aug 2016 19:23

Dog policy

Hi Drone, sorry I didn't get a message re your post, or I'd have answered earlier!

Some of our events have restrictions on dogs, depends on the venue. For Nakusp, the campground policy is:
"Dogs are welcome but must be tethered and or on a leash at all times. Owners are responsible to pick up feces as per Village Bylaws."
Our general policy is:
"If you'd like to bring your dog along to the event we'll have a special area set aside for you to camp in. You'll need to ensure your pet remains on a lead at all times and doesn't damage or foul the site. Owners of noisy or aggressive dogs may be asked to leave."
Unfortunately, unless the dog is a companion dog, you won't be able to bring it along to meals as there are strict hygiene regulations about pets in food areas.

Hope that helps and see you there!
Susan

Life keeps on getting in the way. My wife suffered a TIA in June. Fortunately, she recovered completely. But it changed our entire summer's plans. She is already back in school teaching her last 3rd grade class before retiring. I'm sticking close to make sure she continues to do well. Perhaps we can make it next year.

Have fun everyone and please, please post some pictures here so I can see what I missed.

Thank you Susan, Grant, all organizers, presenters and volunteers. You are my tribe and I love you all. It's been another great event and I can't wait for 2017 ...unless I'm travelling somewhere exciting :mchappy::scooter::D:clap:

PS: passing a CVSE vehicle in BC at 140km/h is a bad idea :oops2:

RJ, yeah, it's me. Based on Susan's advice that I'd have to camp in a "special area" I decided to take a pass. I've been to other rallies that shunt you off to a "special area" and it's not the kind of experience I wanted for my first HU rally. Or any rally for that matter. If in your future travels you should happen across a HU rally that welcomes guys with dogs, hit me up on ADV (not here as I don't really monitor this forum.) I'm still interested in going to one.

Mad Englishmen

Susan, after 2 HUBB UK and HUMM in Morocoo its time I came over to your neck of the woods to see how you do it over the pond! So, I'll be riding most of the Trans Canada Highway, picking up a buddy near Portland and heading to Nakusp via (?!) Prudhoe Bay in time for the meet. We will be bringing some proper English tea, but for obvious reasons we won't be pre-booking our tickets but hope you'll let us come in and join you?!

Hello all this will be my first meeting as well, I'm bring my girlfriend along. We both don't currently have bikes or bike licences but I'm sure it will be an amazing time.
I asked on the FB page about booking camping and due to a delay in response ended up booking 3 days of camping followed by 3 days of rv camping, I was wondering if there a way to get my 3 day camping refund.
As we will be in a truck and travel trailer (were off work for a month traveling bc and the rockies).
I've been slowly doing research and planning a trip on a DR650SE to south america and hopefully will buy bikes next year, take a year to gear them up and get her used to riding before we take off the following year.
Can't wait to see all the bikes, learn lots, hear the travel stories, gain knowledge and see ALEX!

rwsurrey 19 Aug 2017 21:20

My first rally!

Looking forward to the event, meeting some cool people and learning some tips. I've got a lot of experience traveling in South America and SE Asia if anyone is planning travels there.

Does anyone know where can I find a full schedule(times etc.)? Also interested in the riding clinics on Sat, if anyone the info for that.

Hi Susan/Grant, further to my last message, Rich and I are on track to pass through Nakusp on our way south having been to Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay). We've had to adjust our schedule so are planning to drop in for Thursday night only. Grant advised Rich that you have enough presenters so we cant sing for our supper and we're unable to work out whether we can pay just for one night as the website says ' its too late for pre-payment, just turn up - there's space available', or something like that, so that's what we're going to do in the hope you can put us up for the night!! doh

See you later this week.
Mark
