HU Germany Summer Meeting 14-17 May 2015

We are pleased to announce the 14th HU Germany meeting will be held 14-17 May 2015 in a great new location - Campingplatz Pfrimmtal is located 35 km west of the Rhine river, about 50 km south of Mainz, just at the entrance of one of the best riding areas of Germany - the Pfälzer Wald! A proper campground with great facilities - even showers! Jens Ruprecht is hosting this event.

Full details and Registration open now!

See the pics from the Autumn 2014 meeting here!

Call for Presenters! We're all here to learn, and there's LOTS to learn! We want to do more presentations and seminars - but we need volunteers to give them! Any topic you can contribute having to do with motorcycle travel, maintenance, planning etc, lasting 20 minutes or more, would be great. Please sign up here.

English Presentations

How many of the presentations are likely to be in English and are you looking for any English speakers?

My plans to return to the USA are on hold so I am looking for some European events to attend instead

Hoping English is OK.

I filled out the presenter form a couple of days ago. I offered to do one presentation on riding to Alaska through Canada and another on riding to South America from North America. I am hoping English is OK. I have done these at HU California 2013 and the MOA National. If you want any more info please PM me. Also, Susan has info and pictures for the previous presentations. Looking forward to this event. Dave Rankine

Happy New Year 2015!!! Welcome to HU Germany!

Hi guys out there,

Welcome to another great HU Germany Meeting!

Last Fall we had tried out our new location - and everybody loved it!

Campingplatz Pfrimmtal in Sippersfeld - what a great spot...

Ideal also for families, don´t worry - bring your kids too.

Great fire at night, nice walks through the forest or perfect motorcycle roads around, like the the famous "Johanniskreuz"!

Presenters are always welcome - Presentations in English are totally okay!

Don´t be shy - we also need some workshops too.

For example:

- First Aid
- Outdoor Cooking(Roadkill???)
- Mechanics
- GPS
- Foto?
- Movies? Like Gopros etc.
- Blogs?

Hope to see you soon - Jens and Family:scooter:

May meeting

Just booked the week off work, and have started to look at the best route down.
So looks like Germany in may.

klausalz 22 Jan 2015 20:39

Hey folks,
I am planning to come, but 55-65€ is quite some money. I have never been to a HU-meeting before, could you please explain the costs to me?

30€ for camping, alright, but what are the remaining 25 - 35€ for?

Thanks! beer

Hi out there,

maybe it sounds too expensive for some of you... But we have some costs to cover...

All the presenters are free, that means we have to finance their costs and presents(T-Shirts etc.)

We have technical equipment like beamers, speakers, Microphone... we also rent tents and other stuff.

And of course we have to keep the website running - to help ALL THE TRAVELLERS AROUND THE WORLD!

Some of you spend thousands of Dollars in equipment that you don´t need... better to spend the money on the Meeting and you get first hand information about things you need and don´t need...

We have a increasing number of visitors every year, so that is a good sign, even if we have to charge 55 Euros.(65 on the spot).

We have people from all over Europe, sometimes even from other continents with the best presentations you can imagine...

Hope to see all of you in May 2015!

Jens(HU Germany Organiser)
Just came back from a great trip around Cuba, and this couple below loved my bike...

klausalz 23 Jan 2015 09:40

Thanks Jens,
I did not know the presenters are being paid. So that might be a way to refinance coming to the meeting then?

Cheers! ;)

wishfull traveller 24 Jan 2015 20:27

Still worth the cost, a chance to meet up with like minded bikers.
At whsts looks like a great venue. I dont think presenters are paid, they may get some expense to cover costs may be wrong.
Still looking forward to the meeting.

ta-rider 25 Jan 2015 14:54

I never got payed for presenting but presenters were allowed to camp for free. This is a great deal. Most of the other meetings are to expensive to go there anymore :(
For me i dont need a expensive camping place with hot shower, a lawn to pitch a tent is fine...I dont mind about cow shit here and there as long as I can afford to come. No to stop travelling and earn money is not an option ;)

Same here. Camping for free for presenters sounds fair to me. ;)
I'mm a student and spent the last 20 months riding for 600€ a month. So I'd love to come to the meeting, but costs + fuel are simply too rough for me right now, more than broke as I am...

Jens, could you please give a heads-up on the situation? Thanks!

El Aleman - Jens 1 Feb 2015 21:02

Meeting costs...

Hello Travellers,

Again - it is easy to understand...

The Meeting costs are well calculated. Presenters are free to camp, participate at the workshops, etc. - nobody gets paid.
All the other participants have to pay the Meeting Fee. The best is to pay in advance, then you can save 10 Euros.

---Please stop discussions about the Meeting costs...---

People spend 1000s of Euros in Equipment on their bikes!!!
If the would have spent the money to come to the HU Meeting, they would have saved maybe a lot of their money...
It is easy to save... and here you learn how!

So guys, back to the most important - only 4 more months!
Springtime is coming soon - get your bike ready!

See you all in May - Jens

Hi Jens,

I am quite keen to come to the HU meeting and was thinking even of presenting this time. I've never done it before but I might run a topic or two by you, see if it's of interest.

Thing is, my boyfriend and I set off on our travels a year ago and are currently in India, returning to Bulgaria end of March to then sort out our bikes. We've had a few problems and are thinking to return to Berlin to sort them out. If all goes to plan, we will be in Germany in May. (And then we would definitely come to the meet.)

But as nothing is completely certain now, I was wondering what the deadline is for signing up to present? After all you have to plan and schedule it all.... (And I don't want to sign up and then have to cancel.)

Let me know!

Coming from Panama... and the cost is worth it

I attended a meeting in the US in about 2005 before taking off on a trip to Ushuaia. What I learned at the meeting was WELL worth the cost. Where else could I learn to change the tire on my KLR (which I had never done) before having a blowout in the middle of nowhere! And the inspiration was incredible. Since then I've ridden from Panama to Ushuaia, then to Alaska, across Canada, and a few more trips. Long distance adventure touring has gotten into my blood.

This year I'll be spending the summer riding Europe... mostly eastern and Scandinavia. I'm really looking forward to meeting a bunch of like minded souls at the Germany meeting.

Those of you worried about a few extra euros cost for the meeting: Take up a collection from strangers, sell a farkle, give up Starbucks for a week, or whatever. Just come to the meeting. See you there!

XTAdventure 9 Mar 2015 11:49

Me and my boyfriend are really looking forward to the meeting. It will be the first time for us to visit a HUBB meeting. In case anybody has some ideas for some great routes between Switzerland and the camp ground can pm me
We will ride with our XT 660 R (me) and XT 660 Z (Martin) from Bern to the meeting and would be happy to travel on some great roads (or even better off roads) to the meeting.

Happy riding and greetings from

John
There are / were apartments and mobile homes available on the camp site and contact details are shown on the original meeting details.
Sorry I'm on an iPad thing at the moment and can't work out a way to include the link but should be via first posting on this thread.

Hi John: Are you still going to this event? I thought you were heading on down to Portugal on your motorcycle. Here is the url of the camping facility where the event is taking place. Their website is in German, but you can use google translate and figure out how to reserve one of their small cabins. The cost is 19 Euro a night (as far as I can figure out).

Campingplatz Pfrimmtal | 4 Sterne Campingplatz mitten im Naturpark Pfälzer Wald

I am going to be one of the presenters. I will be telling everyone about my motorcycle trip to Alaska: Bears, Caribou, Big Horn Sheep, Bison, Etc. I am looking forward to it. If the event is half as good as the HU meeting in England it will be fantastic.

I posted that up on the strange idea that I could work round my trip to Spain and Portugal as well as go to the meet. To fit in with you coming down with me. But as I see you have changed your mind. I'm back in the boat of doing it on my own. As I said in one of my post. I'm easy and can adapt by plans. I'll have to see what's what later on, as to if I go or not to Germany.

This a very late reply to the question about presentations in English. My presentation about a solo trip, from the UK to Gambia and back, on a BMW 650, will certainly be I English.

Looking forward to meeting lots of new people and getting ideas for a ride to the Stans.

would there be a Problem, if my dogs (AmStaff Mix and Bodeguero Andaluz) come with me?
Couldn't find any information about that.
I hope my dogsitter will be available, but in case of
i need to bring them with me.

Thanks,
Richard from Cologne.

Looking forward to seeing some good side car sets ups while I am there, look forward to looking over yours.

RJ76 28 Apr 2015 14:11

Unfortunately my sidecar isn't any good for offroad traveling.
Its a nice one, Suzuki Bandit GV75A or "Kult" with EZS RX4 manufactured by Carell/Engbers, but too heavy with 185er car tires, GFK sidecar and not many space between the road and bending (hope its the right word for it).

I am coming to see what alternatives i may have from buying a GS 650F with sidecar, because its very expensive.
Maybe i will get a Jialing, it seems a good one to travel offroad and its a lot more cheaper.

but there will be a lot of time to talk, learn and discuss such things ;)

I know I'm not directly answering your question, but hope it's still helpful:
Michelin maps are online as well, and if you zoom to the right amount it will show you exactly what you would see with a paper map, including their indications for scenic roads, etc. If you want you can even print them as well!

This link should show you the area that the camping is in:

doschinos 9 May 2015 11:33

Oh, we'll be presenting at the meet this year! We presented at the first two Ontario meetings in 2012 and 2013, and after a one year hiatus we'll be back on stage :)

We'll do three presentations: Top 3 Annoyances - A pillion's perspective, a Pecha Kucha on Iran and Turkey and a non-mechanic's RTW-trip (how to do a trip when you're not really mechanically inclined, ie me). Come join the presentations!

Can't wait to meet new overlanders and to hear stories. It's always fascinating to hear all the stories from other overlanders and help others plan their trips. We've always walked away having met new friends and learned new things about travels!

Trips we're considering:
  • Europe to The Stans and back
  • Buy a sidecar in China and drive it to Europe (via The Stans)
  • Cape to Cape (North Cape to Cape Town/Cape Agulhas)

Three (2 bikes) of us will take a ferry from Malmö, Sweden to Germany this Wednesday night, then Thursday take a leisurely day driving down. Then on Sunday we drive back.

And of course, check out our website and blog:

Hi Guys and specially Jens, i need to ask something...

Last weekend my wheel bearing of the Sidecar broke.
I am trying to get a Solo until Thursday, but i need TÜV and registration first.
TÜV date is Wednesday, but i dont know when exactly and registration is maybe not possible until friday.

So i cannot say if i have a bike ready to come to the meeting :frown:

if its possible i want to come, maybe friday, but what if i cannot?
I have registered and payed online, is there a posibilitie to get the money back if all options fail???
Have no car available this weekend.

Wasn't a good trip this weekend, first the wheel bearing broke, then we take the car alternatively to camp in the netherlands and in the first night the storm disruptet our tent, so that we need to buy a new one :rain:

hope i can come to the meeting... :mchappy:

RJ76 12 May 2015 06:28

Unfortunately I cannot come to the meeting.
No Solo for me and i cannot repair the wheel bearing this week and have no car.

Damn... But in these days I have not much luck...

Is there a option to get my money back, need it to repair some things :oops2:

We had actually planned a week's trip from Belgium down through France, but at the last minute decided to come to the meeting. So we ended up riding to Sippersfeld with a little detour via Lyon. It turned out to be an excellent choice. :D

It was a great meeting and excellent venue. Thanks Jens and everyone else that played a role in putting it together! :thumbup1:

@ Jens!

I drove home from Sipperfeld to Luxembourg and arrived the gas station with the last drop of gas (490km-16,6l gas). Than I drove home 190km...

Next morning I had a puncher on my back tire... :oops2:

I fixed it and it shold be OK...2nd try! :scooter:

Btw. The front tyre is now changed and the motorcycle is runnig much better.

Salome Otterbourne 20 May 2015 10:06

Does anyone know who did the presentation on Scotland? We thought about following roughly in the presenter's footsteps this summer but cannot remember some of the places he went and wanted to ask him about.

By the way, lots of people on the site appreciated this presentation because it covered a destination that is in close distance and still offers the things we wish to find on and off-road.

Many thanks to Jens for organizing this event!

"Weltreisemotorrad"

7500km in 15 Tagen....

Echte Defekte am Motorrad?

Keine!
