Probably because for the last few years that is where it has been.

Mita is not far away - and a good ride too.

Hey Dave, good to see someone has picked up the ball and is running with it. Count me out for this one, I will be just getting back to Bris from a 5 week trip to Tassie. As much as I would love to turn around and head south again, it just isn't going to happen this time
Bugger, I reckon I would have had a good chance of winning the Postie Tyre Changing Challenge, as you know I got a lot first hand experience recently :mchappy:

Enjoy the meeting
Glen

scottw 18 Nov 2008 04:06

Dave: Thanks for taking on the organizing. I definitely plan to be there. If you want I could give a talk on riding in Mongolia. I live in Canberra now but lived in Mongolia 2002-2006.

Scott

Dingo 18 Nov 2008 11:21

G'day Dave,

I will still have a broken foot, so don't really want to camp. Is there any accommodation at the Rally?

Thanks.

Ummm the meeting is in March .. will it still be broken then (about 10 weeks time)? Or are you planing on having it broken for the meeting? :)

Apart form the pub there might be some 'onsite vans' or cabins at a local carravan park ..

thecanoeguy 24 Dec 2008 10:22

yes accom available

i have sent all the info to grant and will be posted soon ,there are cabins at the caravan park ,rooms at the pub and we have booked a guest house out across the road ,have patience grant is pretty busy ,its still nearly 3 months off

BaldBaBoon 25 Dec 2008 00:31

Hope to see you there for that event,Should be about halfway around my trip of Australia by then.

Started in Castlemain and followed the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide onto kangaroo Island, turned around then headed for Alice Springs via the " backroads " ( Wilpena Pound/Craddock/Blinman/etc etc ) after being marooned in several small towns surrounded by flooded plains had to reroute as i managed to time my trip with the freak monsoon season that hit the area.

Currently resting up in Alice Springs with a busted shoulder from my rather pathetic attempt at deep sand/mud riding on the way to Coober Pedy.

Setting off for Perth next week possibly Via Darwin....so with a bit of luck i will be able to get to the meeting in time.

Specialist subject for a talk.....how to do a massive trip with absolutely no preperation or planning at all or sand riding experience in one the worlds biggest desert continents.

Andy

Boags 7 Jan 2009 22:06

Count me in.:thumbup1:

What's the accomodation plan ? Do I need to "book" for my tent of just show up and pitch it wherever there's room (close to the pub of course:oops2:)

Travelling from Melbourne in my Troopy so if anyone needs a lift, let me know.

thecanoeguy 8 Jan 2009 07:44

accomodation for the meet

Here is a list of the accom that will be available ,
,the pub(Laurel Hotel) has very limited rooms but you need to tell them your there for the horizons meeting, the number is 02 60723541 and ask for KIM ,there is camping behind the pub (bikes only),but its first in best dressed ($2 a night) and will be limited ,so get there the earlier the better ,you can shower in the snowy creek or go around to the caravan park for a 2 buck shower or be a hard arse and go without
I have booked a guest house that sleeps about 10 and thats across the road from the hall and about 100 metres from the pub, this might suit some that know each other a bit better PM me about this one
The magorra caravan park has an amazing camp kitchen and has on site vans as well, phone Ted for bookings if you want a van, on 02 60723568 ,if camping he has stacks of room and its right on the mitta mitta river and 500ish metres from the pub
The witches garden is a great place and is 4 km away and would suit 4 couples at around $30 a head (well flash) if you want to impress the missus phone felicity on 60723533 or check out Witches Garden
grant has been flat out and will get registration open soon

Boags 8 Jan 2009 08:24

Cool I booked at the Magorra.

see u there :)

Shmerel 9 Jan 2009 06:01

i'm booked at the pub

farqhuar 12 Jan 2009 00:48

Sounds good Dave. I'll just be camping so I'll either rock up at the back of the pub (if I get there early enough on the Friday) or down at the caravan park.

Garry from Oz.

Anyone from North OZ going ?

Oz HUBB, hope this is OK ...

giday Canoeguy,
Hope this is ok, read on...

A few months ago (Oct 08) I was visiting the Oz Touratech / Safari fuel tank guys out at Carboo (picking up my new 30L tank for my DR). I mentioned the HUBB meeting I attended in 2008. They showed some interest in this... So as I have continued buy gear through them over the past few months I have e-mailed Nicole on the info@touratech.com.au address about the Mitta Mitta meeting. Below is a copy of the e-mail I sent (if your interested) and sorry if this is unwanted. I did try to PM and or email but those avenues are not open to me at my lowly status.

Regards, Stephen Ashley,
Alice Springs, Outback Oz.

Giday Nicole,

Not sure if you know this (I’m guessing you do). But I thought I’d let you know about the planned (not by me) Horizons Unlimited HUBB meeting for Australia in March. Horizons as I’m sure you know is an Adventure Motorcycling get together (it is a low key event normally), this year its planned to be held at Mitta Mitta which is real close to you in Carboor. The organizers are looking for (sponsors) and events which you might like to run or contribute too, I’d guess you be also able to display/sell your products and or services. Anyhow details can be found at this web site :-

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/meetings

Details were not yet posted when I wrote this to you, but were in the HUBB section see below -

‘HUBB > events > HU travelers Meetings – Other parts of the world > Aussie Meeting At Mitta Mitta 2009’

But you will need to be signed up to get to this section.

I’m planning to take my DR650 on a ‘shake’ down ride to this event, so if you do decide to attend can you send me a message, as I was planning to call past Carboor on my way home on Monday 17th to say hi and thanks for your help over the past few months.

I think you can email .. but not PM ..
The difference is that your email address will be revielde to teh recipent ... not a great worry unless you are a spammer.

On the meetings .. if you are a presenter or an exhibitor there is a special registration page .. and more information to give some extra help/encoragement for those people. TK has been a presentor in the past so Tourateck OZ should be aware of the system..

thecanoeguy 15 Jan 2009 08:21

hey steve

yeah thanks for that
i already have robin lined up to come ,i have a canoe rental company here in albury and get canoes from him.Yeah he makes canoes as well ,he is doing a talk on building tanks ,that should be good

Errr this is no UK meeting where so much happens you really need a schedule..
Not much happens untill friday afternoon night when talks start to take place... then you get more from 10 or 11 am Sat to late Sat night ..
If you want to nominate a time and duration for your talk .. do so .. saves the organiser trying to figure it all out .. and I'm certain you'd both be flexable..
Ride outs .. tend to happen ... usually between groups of people ...

pm me, if you have a preference for friday or sat night,we are certainly not running a tight ship here guys ,although on sat morning we will be having a group ride (everyone hopefully)
up to dartmouth dam wall for a photo ,then will be running 2 smaller rides through the bush back to the pub ,sat arvo will be a few breakout sessions ,secret womens business ,beer drinking ,watching the tyre change comp , swimming, etc, then the spit roast ,so sort of a plan but will get more setup as we get closer ,if any one has a preference for there talk on friday or saty let me know ,also open to some suggestions

Well, I registered and bought a shirt, but I hope I am still around when it is on.

I am currently going through the process of getting myself and bike to the US, for that continents leg of the RTW.

I could probably do a break out, but not sure what is required and what subjects are already covered.

I am electronically and computer inclined.

Terrible fires- Hubb meeting still on?

Hi guys,
Terrible events currently. I was going to NZ and booking air tickets TODAY for an early return to the Mitta Mitta meeting.
Wondered if the meeting is likely to go ahead or date/location change. Any contingencies likely or all go ahead , come what may?
Dave, your best guess would be useful, when booking flights today.
I recorded 5 months total riding and trekking with Royal Enfield solo across north India, Kashmir, Nepal, Bhutan during monsoon. May be of use.
Thanks , Rob

I think the closest large fire is near Dargo .. over 100kms away ..

I expect the fires will be out by the time the meeting in on, the locals will want the tourist $ so the meeting will be on. If you want the local scenery will be very different - you'll be able to see much more without the tree leaves in the way!

Hi Frank - actually gutted I can't come - I'll be heading to the states in March.

But, you should know... 100kms is not that far... the fire has been moving around 20kms/hr and is still burning out of control.

And please... for those of us caught up in the fires or for those of us who have friends in the area 'you'll be able to see much more without the tree leaves in the way' is a little bit in bad taste.

There's a useful map here that's being updated as the fires move....

From Dargo to Mitta .. the terrain, rivers .. I don't think it will get there .. Last I heard it was not a concern. More of a potential problem from the Beachworth end .. bit further from there though. So far Mitta is not threatened ... (I hope I don't jinx them with that:blushing:)

Many people who had scheduled holidays in the area to see stuff will be put off due to the fire damage. While the fire does 'damage' it actual is an opportunity to see stuff you'd never see .. just because the tree leaves are not 'in the way'.. fact. I have had a fire past my house .. revealed a lot ... I've toured in the Vic high country after fires down there some years ago .. it was a revelation compared to past tours in the same area ..

I fail to see the bad taste .. never intended any .. :offtopic: ?

To those who intended to go - go. To those who may be thinking of not going due to the present fires - go (5 weeks .... they will either be out or moved on - look at the situation a day or two out).

extra accom

the roms at the pub are booked out but camping behind the pub is first in best dressed ,the vans at the caravan park are booked out but plenty(like 400 spots) of camping ,if you need a room and too soft too camp we have booked pussers retreat, phone me on 0417 691339 about this one,its across from the pub and the hall ,so its like 4 bedrooms and around $20-$25 per head and basically a nice share house
,the registrations are coming in thick and fast now so look forward to a good weekend :D

TravellingStrom 2 Mar 2009 21:56

I spoke to Kim at the pub yesterday, there are no more rooms of course, but the paddock out back she reckons will hold around the 50 mark. Without seeing it myself, hard to judge. Due to US trip preperations, I may be unable to make it so I cannot book anything else yet, I will take a punt on some space when I turn up. Of course, if I have sold my bike by then I will be a no show anyway :)

Kim did mention they only have two types of beer on tap, Carlton draught and another funny mexican beer I forget. She is going to organise some XXXX Gold and Toohys New slabs, so if you want specific beer, best you oder it now :)

See ya there I hope

Should be there for Friday morning, have to pay my money at the gate as ive learnt on this trip that it doesnt pay to plan for more than a few days ahead........especially as Im currently staying at a huge backpackers hostel that has a large amount of German/Dutch female backpackers that seem really intrested in my increasingly vivid and imaginative stories of biking around Oz,plus the cheap beer on tap here.

I know Im being so shallow.....but Im only human.

Great Meeting

Dave: Just got back to Canberra after a good ride back through Kosciusko national park. Thanks for all the work you put into organizing the HU meeting. I was impressed by the large turnout and met lots of interesting and inspiring people.

I hope I got some people interested in visiting Mongolia!

Regards, Scott

Got in the door about 1/2 hour ago. Both Helge's and my bikes never missed a beat. Lilly was an utterly brilliant pillion the whole time.

We did close to 1600 kilometers on this trip. What a ride. What an event. Will post photos etc tomorrow.

Got into Melbourne around 6pm after a 500km ride back to Melbourne. Bloody freezing up the top of Falls Creek - down to 1 degree C :( , and started raining for the last 100kms into town.

Many thanks to Dave for a great event, and it was a pleasure to meet so many new faces.

Looking forward to seeing you all next year.

Well ,all in all i think the weekend went pretty well ,friday had a few schedualing issues as to not knowing when some presenters were arriving and some not arriving at all ,i was a little all over the shop there ,but got underway and had great presenters up with stories enthralling every one ,then the media projector shit self about 10.30 ,oh far out(mild version of what i really said) ,bit like breaking your only chain joiner link in the middle of the gobi dessert ,so the night ended a bit early
we managed to break the drought in the area by holding this event as it pissed down, on and of, all weekend, dampening the postie bike tyre change comp off the agenda . Saturday we had a lot of riders head up to dartmouth dam for some pics and some headed up to Mt Benambra into the clouds and then a wet ride back to Mitta
Saturday night we had to make do with my tv that Tim the pom kindly drove out from Albury, as we could not get a replacement projector ,after moving the chairs a bit closer all went well with great talks about Russia China ,Canada/USA as well as Central and South America ,
Robin from Safari Tanks did a great talk on how he got into making long range fuel tanks and how to make them

I would again say thanks to all the presenters as well as Kim and her team from the pub for looking after all us with great food (especially the spit roast)and a place to mingle and not to mention she let a lot of guys FREE camp at the back of the pub , and must also mention the great work Sian did with all the paperwork with registration, and Ann and Chris who manned the desk most of the weekend and sorted all the registrations,my mate Dove for his helping hands all weekend ,and Grant and Susan for the site without which we would not have these get togethers ,the best thing about these meetings is the people you get to chat to and swap a few travel stories ,so hope every one has safe travels this year and see you next year ,i'm off to south america for 6 months in may
cheers dave
piccies to come

Excellent weekend chaps, I got back home just before dark yesterday and was glad to get some heat in these Queensland bones :) Them 0 degrees centigrade days are not for me :)

I will be doing a ride report over the next few days and will post an update here when it is done, it will be posted on my blog.

I am now in serious bike strip down mode, ready for my US trip in a few weeks.

Great report Stjepan. Good to see you guys got home without problems. Pity you didn't take the Mansfield road, it was a great ride. I also went down from Alexandra to Healesvile through the Black Spur. The bushfire damage is quite considerable but the road itself is pretty much perfect. You get quite a different perspective though as without the foliage you can now see right through to areas you couldn't before. With the Kinglake roads now being reopened too, we should organise a local ride out there in the next few weeks or so.

Garry from Oz.

Hi Gary,

I couldn't send you a private message as website requires me to have more than 8 posts prior to be able to send messages. (I had 7:)
I am very keen to go out and do some short trips before starts raining. I hope we still have about one and a half months before bad weather.
I also believe there are people in Melbourne area here wishing to do the same, so everyone is welcomed.

Cheers
Stjepan

Great Meet

Jan and I had a fantastic time, flew to Melbourne and rode to Barnsdale then up the Omeo Highway to Mitta Mitta, dirt road was pretty good, except when we passed the logging truck which reduced visabilty to nill, beautifull country so different to Qld.:thumbup1: Met some great people listened to some awe inspiring stories as well. Thanks to Ken who gave us a great tour back to Melbourne via Beechworth, where we had lunch at the famous bakery, then on to Brown Bros. winery where Jan tasted and then promply bought a case of what she just had.(something about being not sure, and would need to drink a case before she new if it was any good.) (:confused1:and I got a serve for having 2 pies at the bakery !) Ken then took us thru the fire ravaged areas, it was raining and cold at the time so it felt a little odd. Now to top off the great weekend we had the pleasure of Kens hospitality when he offered us a bed for the night, a big Thanks Mate:thumbup1: and thank you to everybody else for there kindness.

Paul & Jan
We'll be Back !

:funmeteryes: Well im back in Brisbane and this is a bit late entering but I can say that Im so glad some of that LIQUID SUNSHINE we have be having in Queensland followed me to Mitta Mitta ,as It was very needed down there. My tent auctually had a new branch of the mitta mitta river devellop under and through it on saturday night. what a shame Dave canoe guy stuffed his knee during a wild romp with female friend and forgot-found too hard to bring some canoes as we could have made history and been the first to ride the pub rapids,Being the first person to arrive this year ,I must admit I did feel a bit of a dill, being two days early and all.But after meeting the publican and staff at the mitta pub and a chat I soon felt that these are my kind of people. genuine no bullshit just really likeable people. Just put ya tent up behind the pub anywhere you like. And it was awsome back there , nice stream running, press button BBQs under cover ,lights,Gazzebo, Mitta Mitta has it all for this kind of meeting .Then I proceded to wear the chicken strips off the XJR1300 big time around the general area and up to falls creek froorn the next cuppla days. I want to come back here one day early winter on the KLR with heated grips and ride this stuff and check out the kosoiusko huts
