10th Anniversary of HU Meetings in Australia! 26-29 September 2013 in Dayboro

The 2013 Australia Meeting is back in Dayboro for the 2013 event, and registration is open! Date is: Thursday 26 September to Sunday morning 29 September 2013!

We are also now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a talk; it can be on any bike related travelling topic. Last year we had our most diverse range of topics ever, with some fantastic shows and inspiring talks. To help planning the event we need your application forms in early please!

Some ideas on what YOU COULD present!

We are also looking for volunteers as usual! We had an excellent crew last year doing a range of activities. It takes help from volunteers to put on the meeting and this year we'll need a few more. When you register for the event you'll have an opportunity to volunteer, and we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd help out for just a few hours. It's a GREAT way to meet people too!

Since it's the 10th Anniversary event, we want to make it special, and we're working on that too - more details as we know them.

becsta 28 Sep 2012 03:53

I have put the dates in my calendar, so hopefully I will be able to make it again next year. There was talk at this years meet of a southern meeting is there any likely hood of that happening?

absolutely possible - not confirmed yet, but we're working on it!

Bec,

I hope that means you are thinking about going to both?:thumbup1:

Shane

I was thinking about going to both but they will be to close together and I will have used up all of my leave on my trip to Ireland in June (not on the bike). I will go to the Vic one if it is on if not the Dayboro one.

Cheers
Bec

Hi guys

I'm planning on going to both, as being based in Sydney its about equal distance and a great excuse to take some well earned leave and make a road trip via some places i'd never otherwise go to :-)

I'd like to offer my services as volunteer for everything Audio/Visual again and help Shane so he can focus on organizing another amazing event.

Also, i'd be very happy to offer myself up as a presenter again. I have only been riding for 2 years so i swapped my Saturday spot to the Sunday but it seemed to go well (feedback very welcome). My presentation was on Traveling with technology, happy to share the PPT with anyone.

Cheers

Steve

Thanks Steve! I think Shane has already contacted you, and registration for everything is now open, so go for it!

(It makes it a LOT simpler for us if everyone actually registers for what they want to do, instead of relying on our memories - always a bad idea! :) )

TravellingStrom 14 Jan 2013 05:22

Well, I know I will be back in Oz and I really hope to be there. Unless the new work place is totally against the time off, I would like to present a show, registration sent

I won't be able to make this one but will be going to the one in Vic. I won't have enough leave to be able to attend both with them being so close together.

Rides and things to do when coming to Dayboro Meet

Hi everyone.

For those of you coming to the Dayboro meeting, I thought that we might start compiling a list of rides and things to do up here.

So here is a start:

Visit the Mary Valley, the area due north of the Sunshine Coast. A good resource for Mary Valley is this web site:

Mary Valley Country | Home Page

and specific advise about trail bike riding can be found at:

Trail Biking

Rides from nearby town - Hampton

Hi guys,

Found this page about soft 4WD drives from a small town called Hampton; which is about an hours drive/ride from Dayboro. You could ride to Hampton and then do these rides or reverse some of them. I'm going to try some on my DR in the next few weeks, weather permitting. The link is:

Soft 4WD

I know area reasonably well and it is a great place to ride.

Shane

Good News Everybody

Today I went for a ride over Mount Mee to drop in to the Pitstop Cafe to invite them to become more involved this year; they were closed.

Anyhow, not to worry, I dropped into the Dayboro Showgrounds and Di from the Showgrounds committee was there as well as the new caretakers and we had a good chat about this year. Issues covered:

1. John, the caretaker of the last two year decided he wanted to fully retire and so left earlier this year. Currently the caretakers are Kevin and Diane and their two dogs. They are enthusiastic motorbike riders and members of Ulysses. This solves a few problems; one of which was the amenities. I am certain that Kevin and Diane will be sure to ensure everything is cleaned and the extra showers are opened up.

2. There is a new building being installed in the location directly opposite the pavilion. This reduces the number of powered tent sites; this should not be a problem as there are plenty of power points inside the pavilion to recharge phones, laptops etc. If the new building is finished we should be able to use it for additional talks, storage etc.

3. The oval IS available this year for rider training. The schedule suits and the ground is recovering just fine from problems of earlier last year. So now we only need to find a volunteer ( or team of volunteers ) to undertake the training.

More rides - a little further away

Hi guys,

Today I went for a ride with some relatives and we cam across a few different tourist drives:

Scenic Rim Regional Council - Location and maps

Tourist Drives - Southern Downs Regional Council
Some of these I've done in the past without realizing I was on a tourist drive. Some I've yet to do

Be aware that this region is about 1.5 hours minimum from Dayboro but worth a look if you have time whilst travelling up or heading home if you are coming from down south.

Regards,

Shane

Volunteers get together 7 July 2013

Just a note on the Horizons Unlimited Travellers Meeting; Dayboro, 26-28 Sep 2013

Hi everyone.

We need to get together any/all volunteers for a chat and so I'm hopeful that everyone interested in helping out can meet at the Dayboro Showgrounds at 12
:00; High Noon; on Sunday 7 July 2013. We'll go over the layout as the grounds have changed a bit, the draft schedule and what we need to sort out between then at the meeting. Afterwards we will ride up to the Pit Stop Cafe or if they are full, we'll go on to one of the other cafes. If you can let me know beforehand if you are coming that would be good, but not essential. Hope to see lots of you there.

Thanks, Shane.

Tentspace on ADVRIDER.COM

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'ld post up somethong about the "Tentspace" thread on advrider.com.

The links associated with this thread are:

Tent Space Sign-Up Thread - Page 64 - ADVrider

Tent Space Map - Page 6 - ADVrider

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=http:...339844&t=m&z=3

Or a Google Search: http://tentspace.ridetoeat.com/artents.kmz

I'm thinking that with three HU meetings in Australia this year, this may be an excellent resource for those travelling as well as an opportunity for people who want to "give back". I'm also thinking that I may well use this a fair bit next year when I travel down to the Adventure Travel Film Festival again ( work and study permitting ).

I'll post onto the relevant HUBB sections for the other HU meetings as well.

Regards,

Shane

Today's HU planning meeting for Dayboro 2013

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all those who attended today, it was a great turn out and hopefully a demonstration that Horizons is getting some traction and gaining a critical mass in the area.

If there was anyone who turned up at the showgrounds, only to find that the Dayboro Show was on, and we missed you, I apologize for the hassle. We managed to pick up everybody I hope and if we missed you, I'm very sorry. I'll post this email up on the HU Community messages for Brisbane and Toowoomba as well, just to make sure we get the message out. So some of you will get duplicate emails; sorry about that but this way we make sure we avoid missing anybody and so I ask for your patience.

The topics we covered today include:

Presenter for First Aid Session:I've been unsuccessful in sourcing a presenter and asked if anyone had a possible presenter in mind. Carien has a friend who is a chiropractor and rides and will approach. However any other ideas will be appreciated. I may have another potential that I need to approach as well.

Riding Skills Session:Derek volunteered to run a ridings skills session. We'll need a team to do this safely and so anyone interested in helping out should let us know.

Registration Desk:Registration Desk will be open from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Friday and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday. If anyone turns up after 6:00 PM on Thursday or Friday, they just register on the next day. If anyone turns up after 6:00 PM on Saturday, well, that will be a problem as there will only be dinner, the raffle, a short presentation and Richard's presentation to go.

We need to have a team of volunteers to register people in, give the attendees their welcome bag, T-Shirts if they ordered ( or if they are presenters ) check off the registration spreadsheet and take in cash. We will have receipts books for everything. The idea is to ensure that no-one does more than two hours each.

There will be up to 150 welcome bags to have brochures stuffed inside them and we should try to get these done on Thursday morning.

One or two people need to be in charge of watching the registration spreadsheet and ensuring that we have the right numbers for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.

Presenters:Just to advise ahead of time that presenters get free entry and a T-shirt. The ethos of HU is all about sharing information and support and the low prices reflect that. Unfortunately there is no budget to pay for presenters or pay for their dinners, breakfast, accommodation or camping.

Toilets:
We may have to make a roster for cleaning the toilets on Friday and Saturday night.

I will check with the caretakers to ensure that there is adequate lighting.

Future Dates:We agreed that the last weekend in September seems to be a good date and will set that for 2014. Will we consider alternative venues though as riders like to have a bit of variety. We'll seek a bit more feedback on current and alternate venues, Such as Oakey, Kenilworth etc.

Communication:
As part of the registration process, we will have feedback forms. Some of the questions we look at will be whether attendees prefer to have the venue moved about and if so, suggestions and thoughts.

To let people know ahead of time what is happening, we will develop this email list as well as use the HUBB forum.

Everyone is encouraged to post entries on different forums to help spread the word.

Attached is a PDF A4 flyer that can be distributed to bike shops etc to help further spread the word and also possibly ask them if they would like to be involved. If a bike shop or other possible vendor would like to attend, we do not charge them for the privilege; that's not part of the one-for-all and all-for-one ethos of Horizons. We do ask that they donate something towards the charity raffle; nothing too expensive. It would be nice to see a fully kitted KLR, V-Strom, Tenere displayed by a local shop though. It would be GREAT to have a GPS shop represented and they could even do a GPS workshop.

We discussed ADVRIDER.COM a little bit and raised the use of the "tentspace" thread as well as finding the ADVRIDER - Australia section.

Diane and Haydn Durnell were not able to make it up today but Diane has offered to create a new poster for this year as well as for 2014. I'll send some photos to Diane and she start straight away but don't hold off approaching bike stores etc for the newer poster.
The direct link to the HUBB thread for this meeting is: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/hu-travellers-meetings-australia/10th-anniversary-hu-meetings-australia-66392
Friday night dinner:
At this point I can not yet confirm if that will be at the bowls club or the footy club. If it is at the bowls club, we will need a volunteer to make up some nice directions to get there and more importantly, to get back.

Road Signs:We have some directional road signs for the three main roads into Dayboro and I'll put them up on the Wednesday.

Grant and Susan:Just about everyone has offers of help for camping gear, accommodation, pickup from airport etc for Grant and Susan. Gordon Matheson is the central coordinator for this ( gordon.matheson@cua.com.au ).

Catered lunch om Friday and / or Saturday.Stuart suggested that we try to get a service club such as Lions or Rotary to do a catered lunch or BBQ for either Friday, Saturday or both. Excellent idea and Stuart and Carien will look into this.

Bike lift / stand:Marcos suggested we have a bike lift or stand there to raise a bike for display when its used during a talk; great idea. I'm working on getting a free bike lift for my workshop; its a bit of a long shot and if it comes off we can use that. If it doesn't, Marcus will bring out a nice box trailer that we can raise a bike onto.

PA System:I will book our usual one from Perry's hire, but with the optional second speaker. Nonetheless all speakers will be reminded to speak slowly and clearly.

Steve West will be coming up from Sydney on his Honda VT250 and will be in charge of IT. I'm sure though if one other person volunteered to help Steve that will be good.

Powered Sites:There are now very few powered sites available. I'll check to see exactly how many and if they can be pre-booked. Nonetheless, the pavilion building has plenty of 240v outlets inside and outside to recharge phones, laptops, iPads etc.

The Pavilion:The Pavilion building is a large shed, about 20 metres by 80 metres. At the end that we will be having the presentations there is a small bar area with a glass-fronted fridge. We will use this for tea and coffee and people are welcome to use the fridge. At the other end is a full commercial kitchen and people can use this as well. Not mentioned but a reminder to bring your own mug for tea and coffee.

The Pavilion has its own full complement of tables and chairs. We do need to set them up on Thursday and then pack them up again on Sunday as well as a clean up as well.

That's all I can think off for now. If I've missed anything, feel free to do a "Reply all" email

Thanks

Shane

does anyone who is already going have a spare tent and other camping gear so I don't have to cart it all on the plane from Sydney?

Hi John.

Absolutely. I'll send you Stephen's contact details in the next few days and you can then liase direct. I think having two people on IT will be a great boon. Would you be AOK to include looking after the PA system and data projectors as well? It sort of fits in together. The reason I ask is that we'll go through these on Thursday afternoon to make sure that you are not thrown into the deep end.

Australian Road Rider and Australian Motorcyclist magazines

Hi everyone,

For those who haven't been to HU Travellers Meeting/Overland Expo and want to know what it is all about there are two different and separate articles in Australian Road Rider and Australian Motorcyclist magazines respectively. The ARR article is a series of interviews with different volunteers and travellers and the AMM article is a report from last years meet in Dayboro. Both are good reads and hopefully will encourage a few more to register for what should be a series of cracker events.

Shane

A little late in the day, but being on the road things never go smoothly. Just wondered if you wanted to squeeze in another preso. 5 years from India to Aus I could do a very broad outlook or a bit more focus on a set of countries.

India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (2 years on the road)or Thailand, Laos, Cambodia or Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor.

No worries, as they say Down Under if you can't.

Sorry John, we are full up for presentations! However, we hope you come anyway, and of course get your name in early for 2014 if you're still in Oz, or for HUBB UK 2014!

And just in case, if you have something already, it would be great to have something in the back pocket just in case someone doesn't make it because their bike broke down.

See you there!

John Enfield 3 Sep 2013 08:05

Hi Grant,

No problem, i'll save my pennies and get there for a beer or two or three and have a good old natter with everyone.

I'll be in New Zealand next followed by South America so if the timings right I'll volunteer then.

Look forward to seeing you at Dayboro,

See you there!

Just a reminder that the Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast options will be closed later today ( Monday 16 September 2013 ) so that the food/catering can be ordered. So if you are coming and would like to have a catered Saturday night dinner and/or Sunday morning breakfast, you need to register via the HU website wull, now, really.

You will still be able to register later, but the catered Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast optionswill be closed.

shanekfalcon 17 Sep 2013 01:54

Pre-Registration is still open ... BUT ...

Orders for the catered Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast have now closed. So if you have not registered yet, be aware that self-catering will be the order of the day for these two meals. Mind you, there is plenty of choice to eat out in the area, especially Eagle Boys pizza. Pizza ... :taz: or perhaps the pub jeiger

What a fantastic meeting! A big thank you to the organizers and presenters - we had a lot of fun and enjoyed everything! And thank you also to all that came to our presentations.... it is wonderful to be able to share our experiences with so many like-minded people!

We published some pictures in our blog and on our fb page.

Nice blog Scootergal. I'm interested in the flipcard features, how do you do that?

That's an excellent idea about facebook. If anyone is interested, my facebook thingy is: https://www.facebook.com/shane.kuhl1

If you see pictures my DR800 and V-Star 650 you are in the right place.

Be aware though, I'm quite likely to invite you to the Adventure Travel Film Festival as well as next year's Horizons Unlimited events. That is, once I'm recovered from this one.

Oh, and my blog is: sanityontwowheels.blogspot.com

It's one of the Dynamic templates from Blogger. I'm not overly thrilled with Blogger - there are a lot of things that break too easily.

I had a great weekend, and met a heap of people who I never met before, except by online :)

Great to meet Susan and Grant finally, missed by 2 days on my Americas trip in 09, but better late than never. I missed getting a group photo, better get the photoshop out ;)

Roll on next year, maybe a trip, maybe a HU meet, or both :)

Also, for those that don't have it and actually want it, my facebook account is

Had a great time at dayboro. It was the first time I have attended one of these gatherings and I might say it was inspiring.
Could anyone tell me who the vendor was selling items right out front of the hall. I failed to get a card and can't remember who he was. He had a catalogue of racks that I am trying to source.
Regards,
Richard.

Hi Richard,

Really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the weekend. Hope that you can make it next year as we have some big plans; bigger venue and the first weekend in October ( the Monday is a public holiday ). Watch this space for complete details.

There were two vendors; Lachlan from MTD luggage ( European Motortours with MotoGP and SBK, Motorparts Australia, Bike Luggage, Classic Motorcycles - MTD-Luggage Classic Line )and Ron from Motorcycle Adventure Products ( Adventure Bike | Commuter | Cruiser | Sports Tourer | MotorCycle Adventure Products supports them all! )

Regards,

Shane
