Xr650R Oil Changes

I recently bought an Xr650R second hand from a dealer??? and am awaiting them to supply the owners manual they promised. In the mean time I'm just wondering whether any one can advise me on the oil change intervals required and the oil weight. HAs anyone got any recommendations for an oil type. I'm considering Motul 300V or Belray. ANy ideas??

Thanx

10w40 is fine. Martin's sounded loose on straight 20w when it got hot. semi/fully synth is pretty much personal choice. I'd use semi-synth.

the real issues are oil quality and contamination and that depends on your wrist action and dust/water where you're riding. you're meant to change it every 1000km, but that's for hard use. most people can safely extend that to 2000/3000km without much risk. Martin changed it after 3000km in Algeria and the old oil was still OK, but the level was rather low.

I used to run Shell semi-synth in an XR400 for 5000km at a time where 1500km change was recommended.

Never use 'energy-conserving' as the additives will make your clutch useless. Many 650r riders use 15-40W previously assumed to for diesel engines. Check oil areas of this section for other info. For the 650r only check the oil after a 5 minute warmup with a stopped motor. Refilling the oil is done in two stages with half going in, then starting the bike for a minute, stopping the engine and filling the remaining amount - if filled once you will overflow by a half liter. It will come out your airbox onto your boots or gear. Promise. Manuals are available online. Go to yahoogroups.com and look for xr650r group. Great info here - best group I am in.
