XR650L v Dominator carburation

very happy with my XRL. XR600 chassis plus Dommie engine, but what is the carburation based on? it only has one exhaust compared with 2 on the Dommie. it runs well, but is heavily restricted. I want to liberate its ponies, but I don't want to make it any louder - its louder than the Dommie. I was considering a lighter, narrower muffler to better clear the panniers.
I also want to move the battery to shave width off the left. has anyone found a better home for it?
has anyone come across a kick-start kit? I haven't looked inside to see what's missing, but I imagine it used to be a kicker.
thanks for your ideas.

The carb is a CV carb that I haven't seen on any other model, though I've never seen a Dommie in person. I would imagine the same carb is used.

Unplugging it and getting more power means it'll get louder. You'll notice it gets louder if you even put a foam air filter in it.

To get more power you can remove the snorkel from the airbox and you can grind off the welds on the muffler baffle and replace it with a baffle from Thumper Racing, at which point you must richen the jetting (they're pretty lean stock but it won't run with stock jetting after these mods) The bike will get significantly louder but it's not obnoxious. More power = more airflow = more noise, unfortunately.

There aren't any mufflers on the market that I've seen that aren't significantly louder than stock, so I think you'll have to decide what's more important to you there.

As for a kickstarter, I've been told an XR600R kickstart setup will fit on the bike but I can't verfiy that.

Talk to Baja Designs about the battery - I believe they've done just what you're looking to do. Panniers do sit wide with the battery in its stock location.

Cheers,
Wright

thanks for the tips - I'll talk to Baja. I've managed to keep my XR400 very quiet without making it either a fire breather or asthmatic so I might get a muffler made up/modified.

I had a chat with Greg at Baja and they don't know of either kick-start kits or battery repositioning kits. I guess I can move some of the electrics when I get rid of the smog pump and associated pots and plumbing, but I'd still welcome input from anyone who's already found a way to get the width-with-boxes right down. thanks

Rich,

I had a look at an early Dommie ( '91 model) and that had both electric and kick start fitted, some years back. so i would assume that parts must be available..

As for more power and other mods, try: http://members.aol.com/xr650rr/

This guy has used an XR for a motard conversion, and has done some of the things you are enquiring about.

Hope this helps
