Hi all, I've just aquired the red '86 xr600 with a dominator engine , Italian import.Just sortin out registration and gettin on the road. I was wonderin if anyone out there can identify the forks.? Thought they might be cr but the bottoms don't look like that.. Or do they? Any Ideas?? They've got WP stickers on. But the sticker says turn up to 7 for the hardest setting, the adjusting screw goes up to 8. I've not had a bike with usd forks before so any info would be much appreciated.
The white one is gonzo the great, my trusty dommie. Rattles an smokes first thing but keeps on keepin on. Anyone got a decent dommie engine for sale? Within 100 miles of London.

They look like WP 4054's, or possibly 4357's, but i could br wrong. Measure the stanchions and the top tripple clamp to obtain the measurement, in mm of course. Either 40mm 0r 43mm stanchions.

Cheers for that, stanchions are 40mm and tops are 54mm. I'll check out WP4054's , see how they match up.

Okay, it feels good to be right :) I've played with these forks before, i find them to be kinda buttery. WP4860 are much more stable, and have a larger 22mm? axel. I have seen many 4054's with broken axel clamps!

Hmmm....sounds nasty. They are kinda spongy. I was thinking of finding some stock xr600 forks and yolks as I've heard they work fine in good condition, but I'll hang on 'til the bike's registered so I can give 'em a proper test. Do you reckon the headstock will have been machined to fit the 4054's and their yolks.? In which case I guess that would mean I can't go back to stock.

There is no reason to machine the headstock. If you are going to change your forks, you only need the pin connecting the two tripple clamps machined to match the bearings used in the headstock. A solid piece of 6061-T6 aluminum is suitable.
These forks can be re-sprung, but they are really old tech. Also kinda weak IMHO, but it really depends what you need to get out of them, really. Questions like how heavy will you load your bike, where will you take it, etc...Nice thing about WP4860 is it leaves you with some really nice braking and wheel hubb options that are plug and play. They are also very plentiful AKA almost every KTM has a set.

Ok, that makes sense. I'll be sticking with what's on her for the time being and she how it goes. Cheers for the info on the 4860's though, they sound like the nuts. I'm not sure if I'll be going seriously offroad or carrying much weight on the bike anytime soon but I'll keep me eyes peeled for a set for the right price.
