Service intervals and oil volumes: XL600V (TransAlp) and NX650 (Dominator)

I ask as I have down loaded a manual for the TransAlp and it said 8000 miles (13000km) between oil changes and about 2.8 litres of oil!

These seems pretty incredible!

So, to confirm, for TransAlp and the Dominator (90s models) what are the oil change intervals and what volume of oil do they take?

Can't help with the Dominator but for the 600 Alp you want:

Oil change-2.2 litres

Oil and filter change-2.4 litres

Dry engine + new filter (ie after a complete rebuild)-2.8 litres

The 8000 mile interval is what Honda specify but I normally change mine around the 6000 mile mark, new filter every other change. 10W40 semi-synth works for me.

Oh, and the Alp has a dipstick so it's easy to check as you go when refilling.

It is... until it needs the valve clearances checking. A job that requires a 'modified' spanner and a LOT of shouting...! :censored:

Oil changes.

I personally would use mineral oil and change it every 4k miles. Lets face it, how long does it take to treat the old girl to a drop of fresh stuff, and mineral changed frequently is as good as semi used for longer.

As far as the shims go..... Have them looked at before doing a monster trip, then forget them. They wont need touching, 7 Honda's and I've never had them need adjusting.

Shims...?

Ta's use screw & locknut adjusters, not shims. A pain to do but it's only every 8000 miles.

You're right about mineral oil, perfectly good in the old TA. More of a personal preference really.

2000 miles and 2.1 litres, filter change every 4k (today's the day, funnily enough). The old oil always comes out pretty clean, and I haven't had to top up between changes yet. It simply doesn't use any (36k).
