Screw sizes Blackbird

How can I find out the correct size of the screws for the front brake fluid master cylinder cover without removing them? They're stuck in place and I don't want to use brute force until I have replacements in case they break. The slots for the crosshead screwdriver are worn, too, making the procedure even more problematic.

I've looked fairly closely through the Haynes manual and can't find the sizes in it. Any ideas?

Go to a website that provides an online Honda parts catalog (for example, Partzilla), and look up the screw on the parts catalog there.

The text listing of the parts that accompanies each diagram will also provide the size of the screw.

The slots are probably worn because in the past, someone has used a Phillips screwdriver to remove what they think are Phillips (cross-head) screws.

Honda does not use Phillips screws on any of their motorcycles. They use JIS (Japanese Industrial Specification) screws, which are very similar in appearance, but very different in design.

What you need to do, if you plan to do any maintenance work on your bike in the future, is to get yourself a set of JIS screwdrivers. That will make removing and installing fasteners a lot easier, and stop the damage to the fastener heads.

See this article for a full explanation (with pictures) of the difference between Phillips and JIS fasteners: Phillips vs. JIS... Phillips Loses .
