African Twin Voltage regulator
 

Hi all,

The guy that is riding with us was having a problem with the voltage regulator on his African twin. We brought a new one in as well as a new battery and fitted same. Unfortunately the new voltage regulator is getting so hot that you cannot touch it so we are still camping. If there is anybody out there that can help it will be appreciated.

The model is:XRV750s (1995)

The Regulator / Rectifier faults on the ATs isn’t very rare. The most of the time is about overcharging and sometimes is in the opposite direction.
The temperature on him can show you about this overcharge but don’t take this as a parameter.

You will need a multimeter and at list someone who knows how to use it.
The most of the not originals Regulators doesn’t work well even the Japanese. If you aren’t sure, go for the original.
If you can’t get one right now, you can attach the multimeter to the cockpit connected to the battery and try to maintain the voltage between the 13V and 14.4V turning off/on the lights or cutting one yellow wire from the regulator or two in the worst condition.

May try and find a pc shop and get a little 12v heatsink fan and install on top of the heatsink.

The regulator from an Yamaha Virago fits in as well, but you need a Voltmeter to connect as well. There is one wire you do not connect, i do not remember which one it was. I did that last year in Venezuela and than the bike was running great again.
The part from the Virago costed only 50,- Us $ new, the part from the Twin would have been 7 times as expensive and i would have had to wait for a long time!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the info. We eventually traced the fault to the ignition switch that was replaced earlier after an attempted robbery. Javier, the flow chart was especially helpfull
