Africa twin oil filter
Need an oil filter for a 98 Africa Twin.Am in Ushuaia Argentina.Does anyone know if these filters can be cross referenced to an aftermarket filter like baldwin or ryco?
Also have an issue with oil usage.Bike uses up to 1.2 litres per 500km.No obvious leaks, not running rough or blowing smoke, plugs not fouled up,exhaust seems fairly clean. Only had the bike a few weeks and the filter looks very old...am wondering if it has ever been changed in 40,000 odd k's. Any feedback would be aws!Cheers. |
If an engine hasn't been used much for a while the oil level will build up with water from condensation which will then burn off if it's run as you presumably are, making it look like you've burnt a lot of oil, but it won't carry on doing it as the oil you topped it up with won't evaporate.
Might not be the case but I thought it might be worth mentioning. |
If you go on the K&N Filters Website you can find the type for your bike. Once you have part number enter it into Part Search and click on Application List. You may find it matches a bike sold locally.
K&N Products by Vehicle Search - Year, Make, Model, Engine Search yours may be KN303 http://www.knfilters.com/search/appl...px?Prod=KN-303 lots of models and if still no luck try Cross Reference which list Manufactures part numbers which you can take to any dealer. http://www.knfilters.com/search/kn_c...px?part=KN-303 It may be the same as a Transalp. If you go near the USA buy two Scotts Oil Filters, fully washable steel mesh. |

It is the same as a Transalp, at least the XL600v |

FWIW, I have a high miles Transalp that uses oil, but only badly when riding over 5500rpm (then it uses a litre for 1000km). At about 4000rpm it uses virtually none. It doesn't smoke either.
I've been told the oil somehow disappears through the valve guide stems (sorry, I'm not a mechanic, so I probably haven't explained this right). I can also confirm (as advised above) that the 600cc Transalps have the same oil filter as the 750cc Af Twins. There are a few Trannies in Argentina, so somebody must sell filters. So, slow it down... Hope that helps, cheers Chris |
