Africa Twin: New tubless wheels?
 

I'm buying an AT for a long trip - including the length of Africa.


I'm planning to replace the wheels with tubeless. Can anyone recommend the most economical way to do this? I know custom wheels are available, but they're pricey.

Ask John at Rally Raid in the UK about BARTubeless polymer sealing.
He often sends batches to Italy to get done and I bet he's done some ATs.
Make sure you rims are suitable, especially the 21-inch front which can be problematical wrt sealing on many bikes.
As it's spoke, will be easy to change the rim or consider a Tubliss for the front.

Outex kit works. Rear is easy, but front is tricky as there is not much freeplay between the spokes and the bead.

My 2016 AT spoke wheels was converted by the first owner.
Not sure what kit he fitted but he purchased it in the EU.

Works well no problems, would recommend you fit a TPMS system?

Not happy with the TPMS system fitted by the first owner.

I'm confused.. you say previous owner fitted conversion and works well no problems, yet in the next sentence you say you are not happy.

Am I not the first owner?
Not happy with the TPMS that was fit by the first owner.
Very happy with the wheel conversion kit?

A TPMS would probably be a good idea.

I noticed there was a constant pressure drop after doing the Tubless conversion on mine. I needed to air the tyres at least once a week. I didn't bother trying to find the problem on the front, just placed a tube back in it, but I found the rear tyre was leaking around the bead. Not sure if I got some sand in there, because it got worse with age. Fitted a new tyre the other day and now its good again.

Actually, now I think about it, a TPMS is a smart idea for all such tubeless conversions for the reasons mentioned above.
That kit is about 35 quid on ebay UK.
Will add it to my TL page.

A mate runs one on his TL'd TTR and if nothing else, it's interesting to see how pressures rise and fall over the course of a ride.

Squil, were you running Slime in your tyres? Potentially a good backup to ensure a proper seal (and also to spot bead leaks if not).

I would dearly have loved to have had TPMS on my desert cars and bikes in the Sahara where you really do want to keep tabs on what they're doing.
Once hot they get less effective in soft sand but go too far and you risk punctures and every time you grope around with a pressure gauge you lose half a psi.

Now just 35 quid - thank you chips, China and wireless technology.

I think many people don't understand that outside Temperatures has a direct relationship with the tyre pressures.
The other day with the bike sitting in direct sunlight of about 35c the pressures increased without riding by .5bar (7 lb PSI)

One other interesting point with a TPMS fitted.
This has happened to me a few times now.

Also sometimes when the road surface changes and the bike doesn't feel 'right' and without TPMS I might have stopped and kicked my tyres. A quick glance at the dash is very reassuring.

So as you say for 35 quid it's not a bad investment. :D:D:D:D

p.s.
TPMS is waste of money, tried ones Garmin system and put it away.
You can feel differences in air pressure on bike pretty easily.
