Africa Twin Fuel Pump
 

hey guys Im travelling around south america on africa twin RD07 1998 and fuel pump gettig veryyyyyy hot and stop working ,I took the pump out and now im running ou petrol level, if anyone know about this problem let me know ASAP pleaseeeeee ,manyyyyyyyy thanks

Carlo - sorry to say this is a very common problem on AT's. Many guys carry a spare pump or change it to another type. The Facet pump for instance. It's an aircraft pump but you have to get the one with the right part number to make sure you have the correct fuel flow. Someone will surely give this info...?It's cheaper than a Honda pump. I use this type myself. It costs between 30-40 euros if I remember right.

All I can suggest for now until you get another pump, is to open it, and with sandpaper clean the points which are under the plastic cap on the pump. I mean clean the electrical contacts of the pump, in other words. I believe there are a number of ATs in SA so you might be able to get something. If the pump stops, you can sometimes restart it by tapping it hard with a stone or something. You can also run the bike using gravity feed as you have discovered but you dont get a lot of kms before you need to fill again. Carry a spare 5 or10 litre can.

Also go to HondaTrailbikeForums - I'm not sure of the exact adress but search around. You will find lots of info on this problem. They used to sell the Facet Pump; Maybe they still do. Google this address. My links never work.

But you need a replacement pump.

There is a UK company called http://WWW.Wemoto.com com who supply new points (20 £/euros?)to repair it, but this may be too far away for you.

The replacement none OE pump is a Facet 40105 or a later model Facet 60104 they seem to be cheap in the US so shouldn't be hard to find in S. America. Check out xrv.org.uk for everything and anything AT.

The ktm 950 fuel pump is exactly the same pump as the honda and about a third cheaper from ktm dealers - you may also be able to negotiate a bit more discount.

Tourmax supplies an kit to replace the complete elextronic switch on these pumps, 99% of the cases this is the part that fails.

I never heard of that, do you have a picture?

The usual alternatives are:

- fixing the original pump (diode)
- new pump (Mikuni or Pierburg)

You can also short circuit the pump so it's always on, in an emergency. You do need to replace it. Apparently it is common, but a necessary evil with those low lobes on the tank. When it happened to me it was a real WTF? All AT riders should have been warned by Honda when they got one. If you are over 100 000 kms expect it any time soon.

I have a question about the fuel pumps on the AT, I have 2 RD07's and want to replace the pumps with facets, I bought one from the auto supply here in Guatemala,,, but it is the wrong pressure, this one puts out 4-6 psi. is this a problem? should I hold off until I can find the lower psi pumps " 40105 or a later model Facet 60104 ", or will this be OK?

Have you also tried posting over on Honda Trail Bike Forums V likely to have more A/T expertise in one place.

FWIW, I've previously run on a Transalp with an A/T tank and currently on a different Transalp with an oversize Africa Queens tank a vacuum pump that was also used on the older mid 1990s Yamaha XT660 bikes. Sorry forget make/model and bike is buried in back of garage.

first thing I did with my twin was insert a diode in the pump, second thing was to change the rectifier. Now it will run for a million miles ...

This said. Open the black plastic cap, check the contacts, sandpaper them, if this will work you need to insert an diode later on, better get a new set of this contacts from ebay for 20€, insert this diode, 0.5€ and it will last forever.
