UK registration and insurance being a foreigner

G'day,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me with the process of buying a secondhand bike and registering it in the UK.
I looked into all this a few months back with some posts on this forum but never really got any answers. I had to delay my trip but now its back on, only the questions still remain.

To register i need insurance. None of the insurance companies will insure an Aussie in the UK. Can any non-UK, non-EU people who have done this recently please advise of any insurance companies who might.

The Arissa EU 'green card' requires registration info before issuing it. That's quite a stalemate. Will this insurance satisfy the registration requirements anyway.

Cheers.

Bugger!

I just had the following reply from the DLVA in regards to insurance;

"If you are planning to register and tax a vehicle then green card insurance is not acceptable, you would need a UK motor insurance policy issued by a UK company."

I can't find a company that will.
Does anyone know of a UK company that will do this for an Australian resident in the UK?
Surely this has been done before.

Help please...

Hello Jim,

It would need a bit of trust both ways but there are ways around most things.

You would need to buy the bike and register it in a UK resident's name. Your friend then insures it in his name with you as a named rider. Sorted.

This does of course assume you have a friend :-)

Hope that helps

Thanks Big Yellow Tractor.

I do have a friend. I even have one in the UK. Just one though. And they don't have residency or a bike license. Why then am i friends with them?...i don't know.

I only plan on being in the UK for a week or two to get the bike sort before touring Europe and some of Africa. I wanted the registration etc in my name to make boarder crossings etc easier.

And as for trust, I'm ok, but my friend...well how can you trust someone who doesn't ride!

Cheers mate.

Hi Jim82,

I know im tuning into this thread a little late but id love to hear what you ended up doing. Im currently trying to get around the same hurdle. I don't know anyone in the UK that i can ask to register and insure a bike under their name but let me ride it through europe (im aussie).

I have found a dealer that has offered to let me use the dealerships address but
as far as i can tell i still cant get UK third party insurance (to maintain the UK ergo) as im not a resident (will they check or should i just use his address and hope they don't?). also on the DVLA website it says that you must verify your address be means of utility/phone bills/bank statements/etc.

The dealer thinks he can somehow manage to pull it off but i don't know how. im happy taking out green card insurance for the rest of europe (i wont be riding the bike in the UK at all) but i do want to maintain UK registration so i don't have trouble with officials in any other countries (EU countries).

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Jim, I live in the UK and I have just arranged this for a Aussie and we are doing a bike swap.

Yes he is going to let me use his bike for a trip round Oz.
I am going to let him use my bike for a trip round UK and France.
There is some paperwork involved but that is basically the way ahead. Offer yur bike to any Brit who wants to tour Oz and you should be OK.

Hardly any money changes hands.
