UK-Latvia....via denmark,sweden

Good afternoon all,

Myself and my partner are planing a ride next sept to Latvia.
Going up through Denmark and Sweden across into Finland before dropping down in to Estonia and then Latvia.

Will be travelling back through mainland Europe.

This we be our first European adventure.

Does anybody have any advice or tips?

or places to stay in Denmark and Sweden?

Sorry if its a bit vague lets open up some dialogue.

Many thanks

Matt

I crossed Denmark pretty fast, so no advice there.

Sweden is kind of expensive, we just used huts on Campgrounds and bought food in the supermarked.

But Sweden is beautiful and camping also easy.

You can take the ferry from Umea to Vasa over the Botinish see.

Finland is already much cheaper than Sweden.

Nice place is the Ace cafe in Lahti.

And also Helsinki is beautiful.

But: be careful with speeding in Sweden or Finland, that is extremly expensive with the fines

Tallin is a really beautiful city with old center.

And you can find lots of old abandoned soviet military bases, Missile launch sites etc in Latvia and Lituania and Estonia

Nice place is Pärnu, on the sea and good place to visit,

Old bunkerline which felt into the see north of Liepaja

An old Radio teleskope near Irbene

Hi
I have a similar trip in mind to do within the next few years, here are my thoughts for my trip.

Norway has by far the most beautiful and dramatic scenery in Scandinavia. If I was to travel through Sweden and over the top to Finland then I would be travelling on roads with strict speeding laws and only views of fir trees - I’m not knocking it, just saying it’s not for me.
My intention is to take the ferry from north Netherlands to south Norway, travel up the coast to Trondheim, then down through the mountains to Oslo and over to Stockholm where I shall catch a ferry to Tallin.

Cheers

Norway, Sweden, Finland, they all have very strict speeding laws. And also when passing on a straight line....

2km/h to much in Finland is about 250 Euros.
Norway and Sweden similar.

But still they are very beautyful countries and for me it was no hassle to drive correct.
Much easier than you think and this way you see a lot.
And faster than in other parts of Europe, because everyone drives the same speed

TBH not very good riding roads. If you want to hang out in Copenhagen or Aarhus, that's one thing, but pretty much all three of those countries are going to be flat straight highways, or flat congested local roads. There are some options that are better than others - e.g. going through the central main road E45 in Sweden is better than the coastal main road E4, and some of the Finnish lake district north of Lahti can be nice - but very little of it is a long-distance motorcycling destination on its own. Especially when Norway is, like, right there.

If Latvia is the needed destination, you can take a ferry directly from Kiel/Travemünde. Maybe on the way back, to save the long slog through Poland.

For an interesting non-obvious route via Sweden and Finland, I'd suggest checking out the Aland Islands. You can take a ferry from just outside Stockholm to Eckerö on the western edge of the archipelago, then ride and island-hop on small local ferries all the way to Turku.

Actually if I was riding from the UK and wanted to make it as interesting as I could...

Cross the Channel, head up to Amsterdam and ride across the Breezandijk, take the ferry from Emshaven due north to Kristiansand at the bottom of Norway.

Then either loop west via Stavanger or head straight north via Hardanger and Geiranger, possibly as far north as Trollstigen and the Atlantic Road.

Take Norwegian route 70 to Oppdal > route 3 to Tynset > route 26 to Drevsjö and over the border, where it becomes the Swedish route 70 down to the flatlands.

Go through Uppsala and take the ferries from the coast over to Aland and/or directly to Estonia.

Ride from Paldiski via the north coast of Estonia to Haapsalu, take a ferry to Hiiumaa. Do a loop, take the inter-island ferry to Saaremaa, ride that, take the ferry back to the mainland, ride down via Pärnu and reach Latvia.

On the way back, take the Liepaja ferry to Germany overnight.

Maximizes riding enjoyment and minimizes the boring highway stretches. :)

Guys

Many thanks to ALL of you for your inputs and replies

After working out the mileage and only having 2 weeks off work, we've decided not to go ahead with this trip and we would need longer to do it properly and enjoy it.

So we've decided now just to head to Berlin so see the history of the Wall ect.

I'd just like to thank everyone of you that took the time to write a reply to me.

Thanks Again

Matt
