UK Bike - Overseas for more than 12 months...

Hiya All....

Well once again I return to Horizon to ask for help from all the great knowledge base that all of us users form.......

We are looking to move abroad... to Europe..... to be precise....

Now.. I can ride the bike there.... then.... ride it whilst there... and I'm sure I can get UK insurance company to give me 12 months of coverage instead of just 90 days on my green card.....

But then what ?????

In portugal - where I am thinknig I will be - I AM told that it costs 2000 Euros PLUS to register it locally and put it on local plates....

What options do I have - I have 2 bikes to do and that is A LOT of money and the bikes aren't worth it...

When my MOT runs out, or my insurance etc... Road Tax.... what does everyone else do,.....

Thanks, Tony.

Quandry!

Hi Tony:mchappy:

Perhaps looking at it from outside the wood, you need to use the bikes until the time comes to register them, send them to me in the UK, I'll sell them for you and then you buy two more that are already Portugese registered.

I think it's that easy!

BTW we had a great holiday in Balia, near Albufiera last year and my older son and I left the missus and kids at the resort and visited the Faro Rally for a day and night.

It's true, The Bulldog Bash in the Sun! Fantastic and to top it off Joe Cocker was the last act.

We could live there. What will you be doing for a living?

Cheers

Chris

Portugal....

Hiya

Thanks for that.... well... I did think that might be my only option.....

They are currently in the UK - an we aren't so I ... I guess we might have to sell them now and buy when we get out there....

Any other suggestions from people....

Tony.

NB: We are going over to teach... in the North....

NNB: Other option is to take them out in April... use them for the summer... and then return them next april and sell them on....

Anyone looking for a pair of matching F650 Funduros ....... ???

Best idea

Hi Tony

If you want me to collect them and sell them for you, let me know. I'm based near Banbury, in Oxfordshire. Also let me know what you want for the pair and I may buy them in, as they sell well enough.

Regards

Chris

Tony, here's a couple of websites that might help you:

First is an ex-pats site Anglo Info (in fact there's two one for Lisbon one for the Algarve, but hey they're both Portugal right?)

Life in Portugal, in English - from AngloINFO. If You're Living in or Moving to Portugal

There's links to the two relevant parts there. You could try their fora, I noticed a couple of people had asked about cars, but no bikes, so might be worthwhile putting a message on seeing if there's any bikers. As an ex-pat of some years I usually avoid such sites like the plague, but I'll admit they came in useful when I first moved to France.

This page tells you about re-registering in Portugal

Registering a Foreign Vehicle in Portugal - AngloINFO Algarve (Portugal)

And then there's this site.

Declarações Electrónicas

Which will help you to work out the import tax you'd have to pay, it's in Portuguese, but I'm guessing if you want to move there you'll understand it.

I brought two bikes over with me to Mallorca when I came 2 years ago,the cost and the hassel were too much for me so I rode the XRV 750 back in Sept 08 and sold it ,and I ride the 916 Duc around a local track.
It`s easier here to buy spanish plated,I think you may find the same in Portugal, and the language barrier dos`nt help.:thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:
Best of luck.

Yrrggghhh....

Thanks folks...

thats a good start..... I think there has been a change of law recently in Portugal regarding motorbikes... I'm still trying to get clarification... unlike cars that ended up costing 2000 Euros it seems a bike might get away with only costing 500 euros....

Still keeping the option open for selling them though....

Tony.
