If loud pipes save lives, why don't gov'ts and insurance companies make them mandatory???

Because they are anti-social !! It's noise pollution and you can easily make yourself deaf riding said bikes without ear plugs !

I used to have loud pipes when I was young and hormonal !! I thought it made me look cool.

I'm not a fan of completely straight through pipes ! They do nobody any favours, but the stupid "hose pipe" exhausts on some bikes are rediculous.

Bikes should be heard and most do sound lovely (especially a V-twin on its torque peak) but I don't want to create a racket either.

I think it only works if you've got the loud pipe and everyone else has quiet ones so they can hear you coming. It's a balance of risks though. Making sure that everyone hears you as you ride through the middle of town might well increase your chance of severe injury as soon as you park :taz::taz::taz:
